The very early chapters and the last third of the book were up to the standards of most of Doherty's former books.

However, the parts in the middle were simply depressing filler about how terrible the living conditions were. On many pages the text just ran on and on about this, with some individual paragraphs continuing on over two pages or more. I even began to wonder if the author should visit his family physician and ask for help with his own depression.
