Excerpt: OF THE NATIONAL GALLERY OF BRITISH ART. SOUTH KENSINGTON. PART I. -- Oil Paintings. N. B. -- The Catalogue is arranged alphabetically under the names of the various painters, the numbers being only the registering number of each work. All the works contained iu the Catalogue are not to be found at. any given time on the walls of the South Kensington Museum : many are circulated on loan to the provinces, and are indicated by the words " In circulation." Works which their proprietors have permitted to be exhibited for a limited period, for the gratification and instruction of the public, have the name of the owner added to the title affixed to the frame, and are not to be found in the Catalogue. In numbering the pictures since 1868, the year is indicated thus -- "Barker, 222/71/' -- 1871 being the year of acquisition. BARKER. Thomas Barker (known as " Barker of Bath ") was born near Pontypool, Monmouthshire, in 1769; lived most of his life at Bath : he was self-taught, studied at Rome, and exhibited for many years at the Royal Academy and British Institution. " The Woodman " is the best known of his pictures. He executed a large number of ornamental designs for various manufactures. There is at Bath a large historical fresco, " The Masacre of the Sciotes," which he painted on the wall of his house (Doric House) in 1825. He died at Bath llth December 1847. 222/71.
