In the sci-fi field Stanislaus Lem stands out for his mathematically based stories. This mystery is based on mathematical extrapolation and probability. A former astronaut becomes a privage detective and now must figure out the pattern in a series of unrelated deaths and disappearances. A good read for those numerically inclined ones who are disenchanted with todays world

This book was much more of a detective story than traditional science fiction. The main character was a retired US astronaut who is investigating a series of unusual murders in Naples, Italy. I thought the storyline was hard to follow at times, but Lem is a literary master who never fails to entertain with the descriptive elements. He does wrap it up pretty well in the conclusion.
If you have never read Lem before, this is probably not a good book to start with.
