Frequently my WL gets reset to 25 per page by title. I prefer 100 per page by estimate. When this happens my RL is also reset by title in ascending order although I try to keep it set by availability in descending order.

What makes my WL and RL reset themselves like this? Is this some automatic reset function? Does it happen to everyone? Or is this linked to the 'this page isn't working' malfunction detailed in Rhonda's thread https://www.paperbackswap.com/Page-Working/topic/323906/ on CMT?

Thomas mentioned the titles per page changing in a post a few days ago. I do believe it's related to when PBS does an upgrade to the system.

I gather they aren't warning us about maintenance any more?

If you've been deleting your cookies that will reset your WL and RL to the original settings.

There are cookies on your computer that store the last settings you used for each list. Any of the following can cause your most recent settings to not appear:

  • using a different browser
  • using a different computer or device
  • logging into the same computer with a different user profile
  • using an incognito/private browser window
  • manually clearing your browser cache and cookies
  • using a browser add-in or setting that automatically deletes cookies on exit
  • tweaking the default cookie settings in your browser to disable some or all types of cookies
  • expired cookies because you haven't visited the page for 60 days

The only way this can be a PBS problem is if they changed the names of the cookies they're using. I just looked at my WL cookies using the developer tools and they look the same as always: rpp=100; oby=DESC; sby=date.

Ok, got it. I couldn't access the site this morning, the usual 'this page isn't working' plus when I tried to log in it was all about cookies both to clear them and to have them. I did clear them and got on the site which explains my OP. Thanks for the explanations.

Marya,

On your "Reminder's List" -

add two books that are always available (ie a gazillion copies currently posted). Make sure they are books you will never order.
This way when you 'look at' your reminders list these two should 'always' be at the top. Whenever you goto your reminder's list and you do not see these two book then right off the bat you will know that your 'settings' have been returned to 'factory defaults' by PBS for who knows why...just reset them back to 'availability and descending' order there and then..I use Tom Clancy books as my 'place holders' as I've read them all and won't be ordering any for a long long while..

When I see my settings changed back to 'factory defaults' then I just go back to the variuous pages where I have my own settings and restore them to how I like them (i.e. 100 things per page etc etc....)

I've been doing that since you first suggested it in a post some time ago, Danny. Works a treat. Thanks for the tip.

PBS only sets three cookies on your system. I frequently go in---I use FireFox---and delete cookies from sites I don't want them from. As a result, I've gotten to know the names of cookies which aren't associated with a site name, but will screw up my work on or access to that site if I delete it.

Some sites I infrequently visit will add many, many cookies to your system.  Best example for me is NextDoor, a free site that which neighbors and neighborhoods. I sometimes go there to see something---it sends out e-mail---or post something. Then I go into my Tools-Options-Privacy section and delete the 20-30 cookies it added. And this is why it it free. Those cookies probably provide info on your interests which NextDoor probably sells to others.

I've noticed the same problem.  But when I change them back to a higher number the change doesn't take.  In that case it's got to be something more than missing cookies.
