Loved it. Wasn't long enough. Jakes did some in depth research. Love how he combines historical people with his fiction.

Had a little problem getting into this book, but then it moved along. Ending was weak. But a good read for those of us that can only relate to history through a novel.

From the New York Times bestselling author who "makes history come alive" comes a novel that spans decades and generations....
from the American Revolution through the downfall of the Confederacy...In John Jake's most ambitious work yet...

My only complaint about this book is that I wish Jakes had written in as a series. There are so many interesting characters that could have been explored in more depth. Overall though, the story pulls you in and makes you see how life must have been like during the tumultuous years in SC.

Excellent read depicting the old South and the struggles in Charleston during its fall. This book also has a great deal of factual information about the events leading up to the Civil War.

Historical ficton by one of the masters. The Bell family is the center of this saga that begins with the American Revolution and goes through America's antebellum period. Great storytelling!

Charleston follows the lives, loves and shifting fortunes of the unforgettable Bell family, from the American Revolution through the turbulent antebellum years to the savage defeat of the Confederacy. Jakes paints a powerful portrait of the Charleston aristocracy who zealously guard their wealth and privilege -- while harboring dark famly secrets that threaten to destroy them all. Peopled by a sprawling cast of memorable characters -- patriots and cowards, aristocrats and abolitionists, slaves and freedmen, heroic men and courageous women -- Charleston represents America's premier storyteller at his very best.
