Melody Carlson is the queen of sweet Christmas novellas, and I enjoy reading her newest one each December. Most are set in cozy, quaint small towns in the US, but this year she takes readers to the French Alps, perfect for a time when international travel is complicated.

Simone Winthrop is grieving and feeling unmoored after the death of her grandmother, her last known relative. Prompted by a mysterious letter from her French great-grandmother and at the insistence of her best friend, Simone overcomes her fear of flying to visit her great grandmother's birth place in the French Alps. On the long flight, she meets a handsome stranger who helps ease her flight anxiety.

After a few days in Paris, Simone travels to Avre and discovers an entire family of relatives she'd never knew existed. Is this the treasure mentioned in her great-grandmother's letter or is she searching for tangible riches? And why is her great-aunt openly hostile toward her?

This story includes a sweet romance, many secrets, drama about the family watch- and clock-making business, and lovely bits of French atmosphere, all packed into only 175 pages. Thank you to the author for the visit to the French Alps from the comfort of my favorite reading chair.
