It may surprise the reader to find out that Clara Barton started out as a teacher. She was sent to various schools because Clara was good with children and discipline problems. It didn't take Clara long to get the class straightened out and then she was looking for a new challenge. She did this for several years. She was encouraged to go into teaching because she was so shy and retiring.

Clara began school at 3-years-of-age. Clara began her nursing career taking care of her brother, David. By the time of the Civil War, Clara gathered materials and food and traveled to the hospitals and medical tents with just some mules and a wagon. After the war, her greatest contribution was to form the American branch of the Red Cross, a non-political group of helpers offering emergency care to those destitute because of natural disasters or war. Her last major role was in addressing the crisis in the Galveston Storm of 1900. After that mission, she retired. Overall score = 4.5 stars
