This was my first book by this author and I've already started looking for more. The character development was great, the mystery had me guessing til the end and there was just enough romantic suspense to keep it interesting!

THIS BOOK IS WITHOUT A DOUBT ONE OF THE " BEST " BOOKS I HAVE EVER READ!!!!! I read a lot of books so I give a lot of kudos to Beverly Barton for writing a book that I carried all over the house with me as I just found it so hard to put it down!!!! I read it in just a few hours!!!!! If you love a good thriller with a whole lot of excitement, that puts the reader to the test of guessing who the murderer is then this is the book for you! Order this book......you won't be disappointed! By the way.....this is the first of Beverly Barton's books I have read and I am now hooked on her!

Jim Norton Memphis police Lt(Killing Her Softly) has returned in this book. He and Sheriff Bernie Geiger team up to find a serial killer. There are so many suspects in this story it keeps you guessing right up to the last. Very fast read. great story line.

This is the 2nd novel I've read by Beverly Barton and am now reading a 3rd,She's a GREAT writer and I intend to read all of her titles.Keeps you guessing til the end.
Hard to guess who did the murders. Very suspenceful and keeps your attention.

very well written mystery--characters come alive and story unfolds at a good pace and keeps you on the edge. I've read this one twice and still very good.

This book starts out with the brutal rape of Stephanie Preston. Unfortunately for Stephanie this is not the first time she's been raped since she was taken. The killer keeps them for weeks and gets progressively more brutal until he kills them. If you can't read about rape, then do yourself a favor and skip this book. It is about a serial rapist/killer and is very graphic.
Having said that, I must also say it's a really good story with really great characters. I particularly liked Bernie and Jim. I do think that the book could have been shorter as it felt drawn out at times. The killer repeated his MO to the letter each and every time and I got sick to death (no pun intended) of reading again and again and again the same thing. I figured out the killer early in the story and thought for a couple of really bright cops that it took them too long to figure out the mystery.
Having said that, I must also say it's a really good story with really great characters. I particularly liked Bernie and Jim. Some parts are well-written. Others cause one to think how outrageous the characters act. I doubt that I will look for others by this author.

When the body of a young, raven-haired beauty is found brutalized in Adams County, Ala., levelheaded sheriff Bernie Granger and her new chief deputy, divorced former Memphis detective Jim Norton, work overtime to prevent the killer from striking again. When a nearly identical crime is committed, the peaceful county goes into a tailspin. As Jim and Bernie work longer hours together, their feelings for each other deepen, especially as Bernie becomes involved in the life of Jim's son, Kevin. When a third local woman is killed, Bernie and Jim pull out all the stops to find the killer"before he gets bold enough to target them. The sleepy Adams County setting makes for a pleasant contrast to the unspeakable crimes committed there, and Barton captures the bucolic feel of smalltown life"complete with its shallow pool of eligible (and desirable) romantic partners. Barton succeeds in keeping the killer's identity a guessing game, making this a fun and satisfying page-turner.

Pleasantly surprised with this author. This book does have a couple of the same characters as Killing Her Softly, but it is also a stand alone book. Interesting story line, and didn't figure out who did it till it was pointed out.

This is my first read of work by Beverly Barton and I just loved it!I am going to read all her work now.

Female sheriff along with her newest detective, handsome Jim Norton, try to bring down a psycho who stalks and kills women. A good thriller.

Many authors can give you a great ride up the mountain, pushing you higher and higher until you reach the summit. But alot of them push you off the top and leave you empty after you have invested several hours and much emotion in their characters. Fortunately, Beverly Barton does all that and gives us closure. She eases me over the last bumpy seas and gives me a glimpse of the smooth sailing ahead. Thank you, Beverly, for your epilogues.

Does she go with her instincts or depend on her father's. Bernie must find her own way and ultimately try to save the life of someone in her own family.
Detective Jim Norton is the new chief of Investigations in her small dept. Jim has taken this job and moved to Adams Co. because he wants to stay close to his 13 yr old son. At 40 and alone he finds more than a boss in Bernie. Her family has what he wants a safe, secure harbor.
From the first abduction and murder it is apparent to Jim that this is not an isolated incident. As the first leads come in they realize this killer maskerades as a secret admirer, leaving notes and small gifts before kidnapping his target. Later the woman is left with her throat slit on the side of the road.
As I said before Beverly knows how to take us up the mountain a step at a time, and always gives a party at the summit, but I do love the closure. Don't miss this one. She just gets better and better.
