Autobiography of his playing baseball as a youth in Louisiana (New Orleans) in the early 1960s. "There are teachers with a rare ability to enter a child's mind. I'd once had such a teacher. His name was Billy Fitzgerald, but everyone just called him Coach Fitz." The occasion for this book was parent anger at this private school to fire Coach Fitz because he did not coddle their sons and Mr. Lewis offers the values he and his teamates learned the (somewhat) hard way from Coach Fitz when they attended.
The author is skilled and this was much more interesting than I thought it would be when I picked it up from the 'free' book truck to fulfill the wish of a PBS comrade.
Coach Fitz, speaking to his team. "One of the goodies about athletics is you get to find out if you can stretch. If you can get better."
