In addition, this work empowers practicing teachers in understandable language so that they too can create a variety of electronic portfolios suitable for both student evaluation and professional development.”

—Steven A. Josephsen, Stephen F. Austin State University In the world of standards-based instruction, assessment is becoming more and more performance-based and authentic through the use of portfolios. Portfolio assessment has the strength to empower students and teachers to demonstrate their proficiency with self-selected examples of work that represent attainment of standards. Physical portfolios have been in use for many years, but these lack the richness and vibrancy that an electronic environment can add to a description of one’s achievements and performance. Creating E-Portfolios Using PowerPoint: A Guide for Educators addresses the use of e-portfolios by pre- and in-service educators as a self-assessment tool and as a way to measure their students’ performance. The first half of the book explains what portfolios are, what makes an electronic portfolio (or e-portfolio) superior to physical portfolios, and how they should be organized. The second half of the book addresses which computer programs can be used to build an e-portfolio, then presents detailed instructions on using Microsoft PowerPointŪ to create effective, visually rich portfolios. The book is filled with pedagogy for instructors, each chapter beginning with a “conversation scenario” to add relevance and meaning for the reader. There are also numerous charts, summaries, a glossary, and appendices. A CD containing sample portfolios is also included.
