reviewed Curious and Interesting Numbers, The Penguin Dictionary of (Penguin Press Science S.) on
This is the first edition (1986). Comprehensive and entertainingly written but a bit out-of-date if you're looking for the biggest primes or the latest news on Mersenne numbers. Still, who knows when you'll want to look up the Golden Ratio or amicable numbers? Numbers are listed in ascending order (special treatment for "i", of course). The index points to the numbers themselves, not pages. Thus, Carmichael number is referred to 561 for the primary definition and discussion, but also listed are 1729 and 2821.
