Ivins' outrageous humor and biting wit are largely absent in this collection of columns as she hammers on the pernicious effect of modern campaign financing. It is only when she turns to word pictures of people she knew and admired (or, in the case of Richard Nixon, knew and definitely did not admire) that her fine acerbic talent is showcased.
