If you have been reading the books in order, a few books prior Joseph Russo went to warn Andy and was shot and killed. Patrone went to prison.
In this book Russo has risen from the dead to take over. It was really irking me and I could not read any further till I figured it out. I found a review that solved the mystery.
The author responded to what happened to Joseph Russo: "yes, Joseph Russo passed on violently five or six books ago. This leaves two possibilities: 1. The author is an idiot and completely forgot about it, though he has since been reminded by MANY discerning readers. or 2.'Deck the Hounds' is actually a medical thriller. I love the Andy Carpenter series, and usually give it at least four stars. This one gets slightly less because, in my opinion, it had a few too many (bad guy and possible bad guy) characters, which made it difficult to keep track of who was who. When the time came for the climax and discovery who done it, I had to go back and think of who that person actually was in terms of the story.
Thoroughly enjoyed yet another Andy Carpenter book! Fast pace, humorous, witty, clever, great characters....
Andy Carpenter's antics does it again. Takes me out of a rut and makes me smile and laugh aloud. I'm always delighted to start the newest series of this tongue-in-cheek wannabe retired lawyer who always finds a case he must represent, usually involving a dog.
This book is no exception and a homeless man with dog is accused of murder is his newest client. As usual, the defense has many tricks up their sleeve with the help of his team, wife and detective Laurie, Sam the computer hacker, Hike his pessimistic partner and Marcus the scary faithful bodyguard. Together they build a brilliant defense that can't be beat.

Every time I pick up a new one in this series, I am reminded why I love it so much! The characters are a part of my heart. Andy's sharp wit always cracks me up and this was a really good mystery that kept me guessing. And dogs! Love, love, love this series!
In this 18th run of the Andy Carpenter series, the author takes up the case of the forgotten vets. I volunteered with the homeless for two years in Houston and most of them were Vietnam (and later war) vets. So many came back with PTSD and were unable to continue their former lives; thus, they became homeless. This story is a great way to highlight the problem of returning vets who fall through cracks of life in America.
The story is narrated by Andy, the most reluctant lawyer you are likely to meet. He has a cadre of strange and wonderful friends who help him solve his cases. Because of the pithy humor and quick process of the story, they never seem to last very long. After all, Andy is missing a football game or two and he has to get back to his recliner. Great reading.
