This is a wonderful series! It's good to collect them and read them in order but not necessary to enjoy these books. The characters are fun and so likeable you will think of them as friends. The plot is well developed and the pace is excellent. Definitely a page turner!!!

China is in a Pickle! Ruby's daughter shows up pregnant, McQuaid is tired of teaching and wants to become a PI, and it's time for Pecan Springs annual "Pickle Fest!"

This was excellent, the plot was good, the characters were likable, and I read it in 2 nights. I've always enjoyed the China Bayles series and they just keep getting better.

China Bayles is in a pickle. The daughter of her best friend Ruby has turned up on her doorstop. pregnant and in need of a place to live. And her otherwise sensible husband McQuaid has announced that he's bored with teaching--he wants to try his hand as a private eye. His first client is Phoebe the Pickle Queen . . . but just days before the annual Picklefest, the Pickle Queen disappears. It's up to McQuaid and China to search for the Pickle Queen--and for clues in a case that promises to leave a very sour taste.

If you enjoy this China Bayles series, check out the other series Albert has written. "The Cottage Tales of Beatrix Potter" and the series written with her husband Bill, as Robin Paige. The last is a historical mystery series. One of my favorite authors!

New readers shouldnt start here, too much character background will be missing. China Bayles, a lawyer turned herb-shop owner, is preparing for the towns annual Picklefest when the owner of the pickle factory, and the benefactor of the festival, turns up murdered. Lots of threads lead back to the murdered woman embezzlement, jealousy, land deals gone wrong, unwed mothers and China manages to sort out a number of family complications along with solving the murder. This is a pretty good entry in the series, although I did manage to put it down several times while reading.

I love the series and the recipes. Decided not to make home made dill pickles after finding out the difficulty and time required.
