Louis Sachar remembers what its like to be a child, and knows the nuances of humor. In this book Gary W. Boone is called Goon by his "friends?". And indeed he is a goon, one with great talent, and marching to a different drummer. The jokes are wonderfully corny, almost drowning out the nuances about learning to be yourself.
