I am a little conflicted by Ms. Walters ambitious attempt to wrap a well plotted classical mystery in layers of social issues: homelessness, gayness, and custody of minors. At the same time 4 characters are all suffering from varieties of abandonment by and of their families and exspouses etc. The overall effect was at moment almost overwhelming, but in the end turned out to be worth the effort. Her main characters are 3 dimensional and their dilemmas are believable, or at least worth considering. Dialog is well written. I enjoyed the book a lot and I look forward to reading others works my Minette Walters. I think she has a genius for story telling that should not be missed.
