This extraordinary book is 550 pgs of cinematic excitement, says author Maeve Binchy. It reconstructs the case of Lindy Chamberlain, wife of Michael, a small town pastor, who was accused of the murder of her own child. From the very beginning, the case of Lindy Chamberlain was strange. First came messages from a holiday camp in the central Australian desert telling of a baby stolen from a tent by a dingo, a species of wild dog, and dragged to its lair in the night. Then news broke that the infant's mother had herself been accused of the murder. At the first inquest Lindy Chamberlain was acquitted; at the second inquest she and Michael were indicted. They were tried and convicted and she was sent to prison, even though all the evidence was circumstantial, for there was no body, no weapon, no motive.
Just as America had been obsessed with the Lindbergh kidnapping, this "Lindy" dominated the Australian press for more than five years-everyone had an opinion. And even as she was going to prison, some Australians, convinced of her innocence, started a "Free Lindy" movement. This book became the crucial document in her ultimate liberation.
