I have been reading mysteries set in interesting places for many years (armchair traveler).  Donna Leon (Venice), Barbara Nadel (Istanbul), Louise Penny (Montreal), Cynthia Riggs (Martha's Vineyard), Vaseem Khan (India), Jean-Luc Bannalac (Brittany), Francine Mathews (Nantucket), Cara Black (Paris), Elly Griffith (England), Colin Cotterill (Laos), Peter May (China, Paris, Scottish Hebrides and anywhere else he goes), Fred Vargas (Paris and surrounding cities), Anne Tyler (set in Baltimore my own home town), and many others.  I don't know why I have resisted Martin Walker's series set in Provence, France but I just read the first 2 in his series about Bruno, the only municipal police officer in St. Denis, and am on my way to the third.

Still Life by Ralph McInerny. This is a pretty good novel with only a little mystery to it so far. I'm about a quarter of the way in.

I'm reading "Valiant Defender" by Shirlee Mc Coy.  Two more books then I will be done with the Love Inspired Suspense Military K-9 series.  It just amazes me how these dogs are trained to specific tasks and seem to enjoy their jobs so much.  Cool.

I highly recommend author Jane Harper. She writes Australian mysteries. I've read all three, and they are excellent. The Dry and it's follow up, Force of Nature , as well as her recent stand alone, The Lost Man.

Pick them up if you get a chance.

Fer-de-lance by Rex Stout. I didn't know that fer-de-lance is a poisonous snake.

Charles, Fer-de-Lance is the first book in the Nero Wolfe series, isn't it?

Just finished reading, Lark, the Herald Angels Sing  by Donna Andrews.  24th book in the Meg Langslow series and 5th Christmas-themed.  It was really good.

yes fer-de-lance is the first. I have a book that has 2 novels in one.. so I will probably be reading another Rex Stout when I finish this one.

I am reading The Hangman's Secret by Laura Joh Rowland. Book 3 in the series. Very well written. Lots of historical details pop out. Best of the series so far.

Charles, you are right ~ this villan will appear in a few more books.  He is quite a piece of work to say the least.
