If you are reading something that you just can't get into or are not enjoying... Do you finish it anyway? How far do you read a book to decide it's not worth finishing?

I usually try to give a book 50-75 pages before I decide I just can't finish it. There have been a few I just can't get past the first 1-2 chapters though. I get rid of them immediately. I wil rate them as a 1 star so that I don't forget that I tried to read them and don't go back and buy them or request them through here again.

No, I don't. If a book doesn't "grab" me or is just plain bad, there are way too many great books I need to read and too little time to waste on one I hate! How far depends on the book, one I just posted took about 4 chapters and sometimes it's more like 100 pages in with a longer book.

If I can't get into a book by the end of the second chapter, I put it down, never to go back again.  I don't hold it against the writer, just THAT particular book wasn't meant to be read by me - hence why I have a lot of almost shelf new books!!  Why is it that when you mention to fmaily that you find a book that you like that they automatically assumeyou want to read every single thing by that author??  And that's how I got a good 75% of what I never read.  :(

My TBR pile is, on a good day, about 20 books high...so I never waste my time with a book that I find I can't tolerate!  I used to get REALLY frustrated by buying books that I end up hating, but now, I am angry no longer because PBS allows me to put the book to good use!

I have like 300 unread books.  But it depends on the book.  If it's an author I normally like, I'll usually put it down and read something else, then go back and try it again.  A lot of times I skim the book to see what happens later.  Sometimes this renews my interest and I go back and read it more carefully. Other times it confirms that it's not going to get any better.

If it's for a book club, or if someone I know has recommended it, I'll try my best to slog through, no matter how much I hate it or am bored by it. Otherwise I have the 100 page rule. If it hasn't grabbed me in the first 100 pages, it is all over.

I have put down 1 or 2 books my life that were indeed too back to finish, but generally I just can't seem to put them down, even if they are abominable.  I do however pick up speed and began skipping paragraphs and at time whole pages just to get the stinker finished.

If the book is for a bookclub and we will be discussing it, I always finish it, but if it is bad, I try to make a mental not of what exactly is wrong with it, so I can discuss at our meetings.
