This is the second book written by the team of Carolyn and Jim Hougan writing under the name of John Case. Their first effort was the NY Times Bestseller "The Genesis Code". To be truthful, this book is not quite up to the level of The Genesis Code, but quite frankly, very few books are! That was an exceptional book/audio!

The first thing I look for in a book or audio is believability or a basis in fact. Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on your point of view, both of these are found in this book!

In this era of Avian Flu, The First Horseman is a chilling tale.

Using tissue fragments from two World War I soldiers and a woman buried in the Alaskan permafrost, scientists have recreated, for the first time, the flu virus (herein referred to as Spanish Lady)that killed an estimated 50 million while sweeping the globe in 1918.

I found this audio to be an entertaining, highly suspenseful, well paced book. It's full of fascinating scientific ideas (I learned a lot listening to this book, so I guess you could call it "educational").

This book covers a lot of ground (environmentalism, foreign policy, bioterror threats, ecoterror, cults, etc., it is not bogged down in scientific jargon. I found myself being entertained without feeling that I was listening to a lecture.

Case has a writing style that twists and turns the plot and storyline in such a way that your interest level remains high throughout the book/audio. His writing is crisp, his characters are well drawn, and his momentum always fast. I would highly recommend this audio as a great way to relieve some of your commuting drudgery, it did for me...
