I asked why when I went to the p o today. They tell me the flag is at half mast because of the deaths in Oregon. I wonder. are all post offices doing this?

Haven't noticed.  But locally I frequently see flags at half mast with no idea why.  I've even asked staff, and they have no idea why their flag is half mast....so much for national acknowledgment (of what?).

We also didn't notice yesterday; we'll be sure to look next time we go.

Also, since I was recently corrected about this ... buildings don't have masts, so your P.O. was flying the flag at half-staff. Only ships and boats can fly their flags at half-mast.

I couldn't think of the right word. I knew half pole wasn't right.

Before I retired, every time a soldier from New York State died overseas, such as Iraq or Afghanistan, we would be instructed to fly the flag at half staff.

Somehow I missed this thread almost 2 months ago.  The PO seems to be the only place that knows why they are flying flag at half-staff when they do.....I will ask at the school sometimes or a business and no one will know why.

I think we should also fly the flag at half-staff on election day, due to the brain-dead people we are voting for.
