David Quammen's essays and books take imposing, complicated subjects like evolution and biology and explains tham in interesting, creative, and at times humorous ways.
My favorite science writer. I actually can't imagine anyone being better at making what could be tedious essays scientific research into interesting, entertaining, and often humorous stories. It's been years since I read it, but this is a collection of short stories, mostly classified as nature writing, that came from articles he published in various magazines. His other short story collections are Wild Thoughts from Wild Places and The Boilerplate Rhino. See also his longer works The Song of the Dodo and Monster of God.
