The guy at the door was stocky, grizzled, and tough. Berkeley teacher Barrett Lake thought he looked nothing like a private eye. But he was. Suddenly, at mid-career and mid-school year, Barrett finally knew what she really wanted to be when she grew up - be just like this licensed P.I. But first she'd better answer his questions.

Enjoyed it very much and I am now looking for more books both by this author and this particular series.

I enjoyed "meeting" Barrett Lake and hope to read more about her. In this a murder occurs and one of Barrett's students goes missing. A PI comes to talk to Barrett regarding the missing student. She is fascinated with the idea of "private investigator" and decides to offer her help as summer is approaching. Reluctantly he agrees. She decides to follow Jane's trail. In the process the murder is solved and Jane located. Dead or alive? Read the book!

The guy at the door was stocky, grizzled and tough. Berkely teacher Barrett Lake thought he looked nothing like a private eye. But he was. Suddenly, at mid-career and mi-school year, Barrett finally knew what she really wanted to be when she grew up - be just like this licensed P.I. But first she'd better answer his questions. The detective was looking for one of Barrett's students, teenager Jane Wahlman. Two weeks earlier Jane had witnessed the brutal stabbling of a high school teacher in a local supermarket. Then she suddenly vanished - was she running for her life? Barrett had no easy answers for the detective. But, like the creative teacher she was, she had an idea. She'd follow Jane's trail if he would break her into the business - of carrying a gun and learning how to see what's hidden in the shadows. Barrett didn't know it yet, but there was a lot more the detective would have to teach her - like how not to become a determined murderer's next victim.
