This is a very "dark" story. Lots of dark magic and sacrifice. Raising of the dead to a sort of "half" life. The writing is good...but interminable. Alternate history of 5th, 6th century Mediterranean and Rome's conquests. Good maps and diagrams which helped me a lot.

I have not read this book but thought I would pass it on. It is the sequel to The Shadow of Ararat.
