Lush, emotional writing; interesting settings; and intriguing connections with actual history, since the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and their political sympathies are significant elements. As much as I enjoy Williams's writing and insights into her characters, I found the intertwined timelines hard to keep straight, especially since two of the characters share the same name.
