This is a novel, not a history- and the author offers no apology to the pundits for the telescoping of certain events in the Spanish Floridas, on the Island of Amelia, and in the town of Fernandina,
during the year 1817, However the motivations and the actual conduct of Gregor MacGregor's bizarre invasion ( and the more sinister rule of Jared Irwin and Luis Aury that succeeded it) stem directly from the records of that turbulent year.

The 2 people named are presented in the The Golden Isle as actors in its larger framework. And it is a matter of local record that a witch named Felippa lived in Fernandina at this time and worked strange miracles among its citizens. All other onstage perticipants are imaginary. Any resemblance to persons living in that era is purely coincidental. (This is not a play.)
