I actually really enjoyed this. I picked it up because it is set in NC, and ended up being entranced. There's one particular scene when the main character (a man) and his girlfriend are discussing why people do and do not have children that I still remember so well - and it's been a couple years since I read this!

Wow, this book had me raising my eyebrows every other page. Overall, it was a decent story and I did think the relationship between Joe and Day was interesting. They came with such different perspectives based on their gender, professions, and family experiences. But the use (I would call it major overuse) of adjectives, metaphors, and similes about put me over the edge. It felt like an entry in a bad fiction contest at times.
Here's an example: "As he drove away, he touched the horn and spooked the flock of swans, which rose like snow within the snow, the one flying upward in defiance of the force that made the other fall, or subject to another force, more tenuous than gravity, obscure and difficult to name." Huh?
