An interesting and adventuresome addition to the Amelia Peabody series. A bit of a stretch at times, but then Amelia always stretches things to to extreme. Also a bit like Edgar Rice Burroghs with Tarzan and the many, strange lost civilizations of Africa that the jungle man encountered.

Readers have long wondered what befell the Emerson clan during the years before the Great War. Now, at last, the silence is broken and the truth revealed of a perilous journey to a secret and mysterious place hidden deep in the heart of the unforgiving desert. An adventure prompted by loyalty to an endangered friend-and spurred on by lies and treachery-it leads Amelia Peabody and her intrepid family into a nest of vipers lying in wait at a remote mountain fortress. And when a dark past and a shocking mystery are ultimately discovered, a loved one may be lost forever.

The lost journals of Amelia Peabody provide information about the family during the Great War. While not my favorite of the series, it is yet an enjoyable read.

Ramses is experiencing very un-brotherly feelings toward his adopted sister Nefret and plans to avoid her by announcing that he will spend the season in Germany, but the whole family is summoned back to the Lost Oasis, so... Amelia Peabody is as outrageous and entertaining as ever, and Ramses takes an important role in the stirring events that follow. The events of this book take place in 1907-08, immediately following "The Ape Who Guards the Balance."

From the lost journals of archaeologist Amelia Peabody comes a chronicle from the "missing years"--a tale of adventure, bravery, and terror.
Amelia Peabody; her archaelogist husband, Radcliffe; her son, Ramses; and foster daughter, Nefret Forth, are lured back to the Lost Oasis. The perilous journey to the secret and mysterious place hidden deep in the heart of the unforgiving desert brings them into a nest of vipers lying in wait at this remote mountain fortress. And when a dark past and a shocking mystery are ultimately discovered, a loved one may be lost forever. It is an exciting and thrilling tale.

A hitherto lost journal of Amelia Peabody's has been miraculously recovered -- a chronicle from one of the "missing years" -- 1907-1908 -- shedding new light on an already exceptional career, a remarkable family . . . and an unexpected terror. â Ousted from their most recent archaeological dig and banned from the Valley of the Kings, the Emersons are spending the summer at home in England, when a mysterious messenger arrives. Claiming to be the brother of their dear friend Tarek, prince of the mysterious Lost Oasis, the herald brings news of a strange malady that has struck down Tarek's heir and conveys his urgent need for help. Driven by loyalty, the family sets off in secret, braving the treacherous desert climate on a trek fraught with dangers. Guided by only a crumbling map, the Emersons are unaware that deception is leading them onward into a nest of vipers -- where a dreadful fate may await.
