Okay, I was offered two copies of the same book (different ISDNs) within about an hour of each other - never happened to me before!  Wanting to be the good citizen, I turned down the second one immediately so it could move onto the next person in the wait list.

I have a requestor condition that says that I don't want books from a smoking home (ie not worried about books history, just current home).  The sender declined to send me the book since it is a smoking household - fair enough.  The email from PBS says that I will be next in line from the wishlist, but in truth it is no longer there.  I have lost my place in line for both this ISDN and the one that I declined (that one I expected)!   How can this be?  Is it just temporary while this book goes to the next person in line?

Here is the email I received:

The member who this book was ordered from had this to say....

I'm a smoker, and the only room I smoke in happens to be the same room my book is always in. Sorry.

We checked our database and found that there are no other copies of the book available at this time. Credit has been returned to your account for this request.

If no one else is wishing for this ISBN right now, it has been added to your Reminder List. You can add it to your Wish List if you like when this copy has been sent out to another member.

If another person WAS wishing for this ISBN when your request was declined, this copy was offered to that person, and the book has been put onto your Wish List. If this is the case, we will monitor the system to see if this book becomes available in the future. If this was a Wish Listed book originally, you have gone back to your previous place in the Wish List queue for the book.

I'll live, it's not like I don't have plenty of books to read, but I was surprised by this outcome is all.

Were you the only one wishing for the offer that you didn't turn down? If you were, then it goes to your reminder list and you need to wait until that person's copy has been requested. The offer that you turned down was removed from your WL.

In the future, you may want to make sure one version, at most, is auto-requested and that you wait to turn down the other offer until one has been accepted or you are reaching the end of the 48hr hold.

That's the standard reply you get from PBS when the RC was turned down.  (I think, I don't have any RC's but it sounds just like the ones I've gotten when my request for a book times out.)

If you are not restored to the front of the WL line contact PBS and they can look at your account and see what happened.

You must have been the only wisher.  Now the book is on that persons shelf and you won't be able to WL it until it's requested.  It sucks but that's the chance you take when you have RCS.

Not possible - it was for book 3 of the Twilight series - there are many people on the waitlist for it.   annoying...

I'm surprised there isn't higher turnover for these Twilight books - they are VERY quick reads. Sorry! Which one is the third? I'm sure I have it but haven't posted since I'm low on postage-cash (newbie who has mailed 43 books this month!?! Budget is BLOWN)...and I smoke. Surely it'll get back into the system soon. I'm sorry this happened, but couldn't you have waited on declining the 2nd offer til the first offerer responded to your conditions? Or is it the same window of opportunity?

But you've helped explain why I've gotten ONLY non-smoking RCs on every WL request (4 of them!) for my copy of Ted Dekker's Obsessed - the requester isn't waiting for someone else to get my smoking copy of the book! It's still on my shelf. Ha...funny!

Since there are so many ISBNs for that series, it is possible that you were the only Wisher for that particular book. Check your WL and make sure it isnt there. Then you may want to check your RL listing to see how many copies are posted. When it says "0" then you can click on the little square on the left, then click Convert at the top of the page. That will put you back on the WL for it.

I usually dont Wish for more than one ISBN of a book, since I really prefer paperbacks, but once I had 2 different ISBNs for the same book on my WL, both were offered to me within hours, and I accepted both. I really wanted to read that book. Of course I got both copies within days of each other, but I just reposted one and read the other. It was worth it to me to spend 2 credits at the time. That would depend on how much I wanted the book and how many credits I had, though.

I think it was a timing issue.  I am sure that ISBN had a waiting list and I am sure it didn't show up on my waitlist after my request was turned down.  However, the next day, it did come up as offerered again.  All is well, and I think that sometimes you don't see things right away on the waitlist when this happens.

I often post multiple ISBNs of a book since I like trades, hardcovers the best, but trade paperbacks are fine too - it has always worked out well for me and I have NEVER in the years I have been a member have two come up at the same time!

Yeah, I didn't used to have RC, but I have been having more trouble with asthma symptoms lately.  I rarely get a smokey smelling book, but I just felt that there was no reason to add to my problems since I have a big TBR pile, I don't mind waiting a little longer for a book that is more comfortable for me to read and handle.
