One of the best memoirs I've ever read. Nikki Sixx writes in his journal obsessively, even when he's completely trashed, and it makes for a book that is like a punch to the stomach. This book is a tragic, horrifying journey into the mind of an addict, and one hell of a great read.

First of all, this book is drivel. It is the addicted ramblings of a crybaby rock star. It is in this weird graphic format with drawings & magazine like pages which is supposed to make the reader feel more like he/she is actually reading a diary. However, the drawings are not done by Nikki Sixx. They are fabricated by some MTV artist who wants to make the book feel more "rock star."
Secondly,in addition to the diary entries, we get this ongoing commentaries by Nikki in present day & also different people in Nikki's life who add their two sense to the situation which gives the book a cheap reality show feel. Sometimes this was helpful giving a "behind the scenes" look at different perspectives, but sometimes it was really just annoying. Like I think we could have done without Vanity's (oh, excuse me, Evangelist Denise Matthews) commentaries.
Thirdly, I would have really enjoyed seing some of the actual photos of Nikki, however they were all splotched up with the inky graphic junk scribbles that covered the whole book. The content, the actual writings are poor. To sum it up in one entry: "I don't like fame. My family f___ed me up. I am rich & can buy whatever I want. I am so depressed. I haven't showered in 8 days. I pissed the bed. I am going to do a bunch of blow/smack/pills/ and drink a bottle of JD. I love music." There you have it, the book in one entry followed by a commentary saying how brilliant Nikki was & how f___d up he was.
Don't get me wrong, I love Motley Crue! I think they are one of the greatest rock/metal bands ever. I think drug & alcohalism is a terrible problem. I think Nikki Sixx is an interesting person with talent, but you just won't find evidence of that in this book. Do yourself a favor, if you want to read a real rock 'n roll autobiography of substance, skip this one & read Slash's "Slash."

Great book for any Nikki Sixx fan. Some parts are a little hard to stomach. It makes me sad for someone to choose to do that to themselves and live the way that he did. I guess that is all part of the rock and roll glamour. Even in the grips of heroin he was still a great songwriter. Now I know why my parents never wanted me to listen to Motley Crue..

It is all about Nikki. Don't read it if you want a Motley Crue biography. Some of the photos are a bit graphic. Good times!!

I thought this was a phenomenal book, especially considering it's essentially Nikki's diary with little tidbits of current information here and there. You should probably be a Motley Crue fan if you're reading this, otherwise you might not get the references to songs while they're being written -- or just a rock'n'roll fan in general, really. For me, the underlying point about this book is that this is the story of someone who has taken the long way around and learned from his mistakes. Yes, at times he is childish and arrogant, but aren't we all? The old phrase "hindsight is 20/20" comes to mind. This book also cemented the fact that I will never go near heroin, coke, or any other hard drugs. I don't want to be curled up in my closet with my shotgun, thank you very much.

If you like autobiography's and are not easily offended - then this book is a must read. Nikki Sixx is the powerhouse behind Motley Crue but he was also the powerhouse behind his own decline. His full throttle personality served him well on stage but sent his personal life into a living hell. His diary is self deprecating, dark, arrogant, rowdy and at times just plain sickening...but through it all he still maintained his sense of humor - I literally burst out laughing over some of his diary entries. He has this ability to write about the darkness of his drug haze and how he reached the depths of hell but in the next breath he would point out the funny irony about a certain situation. If you like Rock n Roll you will like The Heroin Diaries

Though I would have liked to have known a little bit more about why he did drugs, and more details of his incidents during his drug stints (most things he couldn't remember too well, so others had to fill in for his story), this was a rather good book. It makes you see into the eyes of a drug addict and how even when they knocked on death's door they still go and want their fix the very next minute. An eye opener for anyone. Also this does contain some sex scenes/references/tales in it, so not for everyone.

Don't read this expecting a tell-all about the Crue; like Anthony Kiedis' "Scar Tissue", this book is about Nikki Sixx and his addiction, period. And it's downright wrenching. The bravery it must have taken to publish his diary during the worst year of his addiction must have been staggering. Don't get me wrong, it's littered with juicy rock and roll tidbits, but the bulk focuses inside Sixx's drug-addled brain; a dark and sinister place indeed. Great read.
