Excellent vampire-shape-shifter (all rolled into one!) romance.

Ulric was introduced in Catching Midnight as a bit of a villain. The heroine had to run away from him to escape his obsession with her and his belief that he loved her and she was his queen. He was prepared to force her to come home with him and he didn't seem like a very nice guy. I was surprised, really, to see he was the hero of the next book.

In Hunting Midnight, Ulric meets his perfect foil. She has a similar name, similar personality characteristics as Gillian in Catching Midnight, but Ulric learns he can't control his way into a woman's heart. And he also learns that some women like his dominance, especially Juliana.

Lots of sexual heat and erotic scenes. Pretty tame compared to much of Emma Holly's other work. No scenes with multiple partners, same-sex partners, or anything particularly kinky.

After betrayal by his long-time love, Ulric had left his pack of upyr (vampire shapeshifters) and run to the city to forget. There he meets Julianna, a woman running from an arranged marriage to a man she despises and looking for freedom. As they travel, Ulric discovers an unusual draw to Julianna, a woman he cannot force to forget him and who does not fear his nature. But evil stalks them, and both must decide if they are willing to compromise enough to give love a chance and to save the pack.

I enjoyed seeing Ulric find love and healing after losing Gillian in Catching Midnight.

In book 2 (Catching Midnight), Ulric lost his lover, Gillian, to a mortal man. Ulric had followed Gillian to the town of Bridesmere and after she leaves he stays on despite the Upyr elders' edict that he should stay away from humans. Hunting Midnight picks up the story here ... while in Bridesmere, he encounters Juliana who is running away from home to escape an arranged marriage to a much older man. Juliana begs Ulric to help her escape ... and when she discovers who and what he is, she wants him to make her upyr as well. In the first book, you learned about upyr politics. In this book, you learn more about the upyr way of life. Fun read.
