I've had this book for months, and while it is entertaining and well written, it is also fairly dated, and very slow reading. I read a chapter or so, then read another book, then go back to it and read another 20 or 30 pages. Raban's observation of Americana (about 20 years ago) is astute, but he gets bogged down in minute details that make the time drag. I'm still not done with it...but don't regret reading what I have so far.
