This one is tense and twisted and -- my guess -- probably the last Britt Montero mystery, as she works with the characters who will lead a new series of books revolving around Miami's Cold Case Squad. "Ice Maiden" has a twist I really didn't see coming -- and it's not the ending (which some Edna Buchanan fans might not be ready for).
This book is apparently smack in the middle of a long ongoing series but the references to the earlier books didn't throw me too much although I think I would've found a deeper connection to many of the characters if I had read the earlier books first. Still, this was an attention grabbing murder mystery about a journalist following a cold case. The characterization was done very well and I genuinely cared for many of these people but when the big bad guy of the novel is finally revealed in the end it was a huge disappointment and simply unbelievable to me that the police hadn't figured it out long before. This is a dark book with a lot of pain suffered by most of the characters and adding to that is the fact that it takes place right after the 911 attacks. Don't read this if you need some cheering up!
Typical Buchanan Florida mystery
A chance encounter with a stranger changes the life of reporter Britt Montero forever. When you start to turn over the rocks of an unsolved case sometimes something ugly slithers out..... A sizzling work of suspense set in South Florida.
I read one of Edna Buchanan's other books called The Cold Case Squad. In reading a review I found the characters in the book had been introduced in this book, so I obtained it from Paperbackswap, not knowing it was part of a long running series.
I really liked this book. A burglar is killed while trying to rob a convenience store in Miami. His body leads to the reopening of a case of kidnapping, rape and homicide from 17 years earlier. The rape victim Sunny Hartley has become a reclusive and eccentric artist. The publicity surrounding the case leads to some unwelcome attention to both Sunny and Britt Montero, the journalist covering the story. With a surprising revelation regarding the kidnapping and a shocking ending this was a very enjoyable read, and has me looking to go back to the start of the series.
