I must say that this book was a great help in my recovery from disordered eating. I was always an intuitive eater (but didn't know it) until a few years ago when I decided to change my diet for health reasons. At first I was only binging on "bad" foods about every few weeks, but eventually I was overeating all of my "forbidden" foods on a daily basis. I had already made up my mind to get off of the health and diet bandwagon when I discovered the intuitive eating philosophy. This book really helped me put everything (including food) back into perspective and reminded me that my body really does know best. This book also helped me remember that healthy eating is about being healthy emotionally, as well.

I do want to note that one should read the WHOLE book. I skipped around at first and got frustrated when, in the beginning, my eating seemed to get more out of control. Then I discovered in the book where the authors describe a study where men held captive with little to no food sometimes took 5 months to balance out their eating after they were released. After reading that, I was able to trust myself and the process a lot more and relax, which actually sped up the process. I wish I had read that in the beginning (when I was supposed to!) instead of discovering it hidden in the pages much later.

This is a pretty down to earth book for anyone who is tired of counting calories, fat grams, points or exercise minutes. It really is the way we all should live, happily with our bodies how they are at the age we are and eating because we are hungry and to satisfy our hunger.

I loved this book. I can't say that I think of myself as a chronic dieter, in fact I have tried to stay away from "diets" and just live healthy, but I can see now that diet thinking has dominated my mind for the last 14 years. Even though the book is 20 years old, and I had never heard of intuitive eating, I found it to be the best method for finding peace with food and my weight. After a few weeks of reading, I was able to figure out why I started worrying about my weight in the first place, which I helped me more than any of the "psychological work" I did while reading Dr.Phil's weight loss book a few years ago.

I finally found all the things I thought would come after I "lost the weight" but instead those things came first while my body is slowly reaching a natural weight. After reading the first few chapters, I kept thinking, "it makes sense, why would my body WANT to be overweight? Why wouldn't my body just want to be at a healthy weight?". Now, a few months after reading it I have all this free space in my brain that used to be for thinking about my weight, I LOVE eating what I want, I actually eat vegetables as a snack some nights when I feel like it, I weigh a tiny bit less than I did before having my first baby and overall I just feel better about myself.

Really great book. Not a quick fix or a rapid weight loss plan- but, so much better! It will help you to change your whole mind set about diets and body image.
