This is a great book about some modern day mercenaries who get basically kidnapped and taken to a distant planet to set up to prepare to grow a certain crop that can only be grown once every 600 years. Well, it isn't quite kidnapping since they were being overrun by their enemies and faced certain death, but still....

It has some pictures every so often. For me the pictures were a distraction, but the story reads well; good writing, well-built characters, lots of action.

There are a lot of references to our own Earth history, as apparently the kidnappers have been doing this every 600 years, so several different cultures have grown up on the new planet, Tran.

It is good enough that I ordered the sequels to see how it ends.

To be given a choice between a certain death or an unknown future to survive is a novel approach to the beginning of this book. This was a fast read with good plot and character development. The story comes to an stand alone end or allows the reader to hope for more.
