A typical workman-like mystery of this middle part of Grimes's series. Her more recent books are more imaginative and emotionally rich.

Its a white Christmas in Newcastle for Scotland Yards Richard Jury, until he meets a beautiful woman in a snow covered graveyard. The next time he meets her, she is dead. He meets up with sidekick, Melrose Plant, at a mansion and stumbles over another copse. The two murders, he soon learns, are related.

Besides writing a good mystery, Martha Grimes gives such good descriptions of England that I want to return. Her characters' humor is just right for easing the seriousness of the crimes.
