I didn't read them in order and I could still follow the story all right.  But there are some continuing story lines (about his personal life) that would make more sense if you read them in order.  Here is the list of the books in order:  http://www.stopyourekillingme.com/K_Authors/Kellerman_Jonathan.html

I agree with Jennifer - keeping the personal relationships straight is the only reason to read them in order, and it's pretty easy to pick up what's going on there.   There are really only 2-3 characters that matter in the continuum - and the info below will bring you up to speed (if that's what you want):

~~

~~

~~

~~

~~

~~

Dr. Alex Delaware - former pediatric psychologist at the hospital oncology ward.  Now does private consulting for the courts and police, and takes some private patients.  Has an office in his home.  Usual love interest is Robin (female) - who makes specialty musical instruments.  Relationship is a little rocky.

Milo Sturgis - gay police detective (life partner = Rick the ER doc).  Has some problems in the department due to police culture and homosexuality, but although it's always present, it's treated with a light hand in the books.  Best friend Dr. D assists him in investigations as a private consultant.

I didn't read them in order to begin with. I'd recommend they be read in order to follow what's going on in his life but it's not necessary.

BTW - I have a load of these on my bookshelf - most are read-once condition.  I generally get the books mailed next day so you don't have to wait.

Thanks Sharon! I am going to add you to my buddy list and will remember when I am ready to order more. I just read The Conspiracy Club since it isn't part of the series, and thought that was just okay. I have the first Alex Delaware one on the way though and will see how I like that one before I decide whether or not to order more.

I've only read 2 of his, not in order and I didn't find it to make a difference. I like the Alex Delaware character. I have "Therapy" and "Survival of the Fittest". His wife, Faye Kellerman also writes detective thrillers...The main character is Peter Decker (and his wife, Rina Lazarus. I've read almost all of hers.

I also really like the "Spenser" series by Robert B. Parker. Laugh out loud funny and full of action.

I have read most of his.  When I started I was reading them in all sorts of crazy orders until I got "caught up" with them all.  The newer ones I have read in order.  There was no problem by reading out of order.  He keeps most things self-contained within the books and the references/characters from the past are explained in enough detail to not detract from the current story.

Enjoy!!

It's better to read any series in order, although I didn't with him. The reason being I started on him when I was a young teen and just read one when I could find it. I've read nearly all the books now. What a great series. You're never lost  not starting in the beginning, although with the relationships you could be.
