Author: William Durbin
After his family emigrates from Finland to Minnesota, Otto Peltonen and his father work in the dangerous iron ore mines of the Mesabi Range. There, in the face of discrimination from the foremen, who accept bribes for the prime mining spots, Otto and his father take part in the beginnings of the labor unionization.

"May 2, 1905-We are leaving for America tomorrow morning. I'm anxious to see my father-he's been working in a state called Minnesota the past year and saving money to pay for our steamship passage. Yet I hate to say goodbye to Grandma and Grampa Rantala and to my friends. Though I have never been further from my home than the Seinajoki River, tomorrow I am headed for Duluth, Minnesota, by way of Denmark, England and Canada." A wonderful book for teens.
