The ent... more »ire Protes tant world Is attending to his religious thought. For more than ten years, theological literature has been filled with discussions of Barthianism. The number of its critics is not small, but its followers are constantly growing in power. The younger generation of Ger man theologians are thoroughly oriented to the writ ings of Barth and his friends. Protestants of America and Great Britain show an increasing interest in the religious discussions of the European continent, and the translations and expositions of the Barthian theol ogy, which have appeared in recent years, have not satisfied their demand for information about it. This book has been written in answer to this need. As an essay in understanding, it is submitted to all who are interested in Barth. An attempt has been made to in terpret his theology against the background of the his tory of modern religious thought since Schleiermacher and in relation to the religious mood of the present day. It is not for me to say whether I have succeeded in such an endeavor. I tell my readers, however, that even after the completion of this study, I am unable to de clare myself either wholly for or against Barth. The inner struggle which has accompanied the writing of VI PREFACE this book lias not yet come to an end The word crisis which is so closely connected with Barthian theology is of great personal significance to me and, I suppose, to many another member of the younger generation. A list of Earths publications is given in the Appen dix There, too, all footnote references have been gath ered in order to facilitate the reading of the text itself, and in view of the fact that they will be of interest chiefly to those who wish to study Earths work in its original context. All quotations from Earths writing, as presented in the text, are translated from the original German. Passages from Douglas Hortons translation of Das Wort Gottes nnd die Theologie see particularly pp. 56, 8 1 ff., have been used with the kind permission of Mr. Sidney A. Weston.
