Unlike most of Reeman's books, this novel spans several years. It begins just before America enters the war and continues until the early days of 1945. At the same time, Reeman develops his characters as he does in his other books. We learn who they are, whom we like and whom we don't.
The book deals with numerous men and women in its 312 pages. Unlike his other books, there is no senior officer who uses his men to gain glory, instead the most unliked person in the book is a very junior officer. And, as he often does, Reeman covers the love life of several pairs of men and women, which is complicated by husbands who are unloving or who die.
Once again, Reeman, like war, plays no favorites, and people we have grown to like are killed as the result of enemy action.
