One interesting aspect of this book is the impression the reader receives that, in 1890s Florida, black citizens were respected members of the community. There does not seem to be any blatant display of bigotry. I can only assume the living conditions of that time period, requiring cooperation of all to maintain a decent living, led people to respect one another to some extent. Of course, it might also be the author didn't prefer to emphasize that aspect of life then.
