Reading the back cover, I thought, eh, I've got so many others to read that sound more interesting. But the NY Best Sellers list can't be wrong (ok, maybe it can). In this case, it was excellent. I loved this story...coulda finished it in 2 days if I'd just had the ability to do nothing else....I can't wait for the movie...within the first 4 chapters, I though it would make a great movie. Makes me appreciate where I am from, how lucky I am to live in America, and how there are so many people out there that will never get to sit here, type on a computer their feelings of a book for the world to see, much less even get to read a book in the first place. Loved loved loved it.

I did not choose this book - it was selected by a book club. It is not my "type" of book. It was AMAZING. I love it & could not put it down. I would recommend it & would read it again. It's about a boy who grew up in a wealthy family in Afganistan and his relationship with his servant who is the same age. The political upheaval of Afganistan is also an emotional part of the book, but not in a boring overly political or historical way. It's a great book.

Probably one of the finest books I have read in years. Development of character, historical accuracy, the author captured the inner workings of the Afghan male's mind. Beautifully written, great story and plot development and it is difficult not to jump right in with the characters.I cannot rate this high enough!

This is a sad, moving story of a boy who wishes he were someone else, someone with more courage and valor. His decisions, one in particular, have hard consequences on himself and those who love him. This story details how he deals with those repurcussions. I definitely recommend this book.

This was well written, incredibly descriptive and a great story. Irony is found throughout the many twists and turns of this book. You will feel passionately about the charachters, both good and bad. Can't wait to see it in movie form and I hear his next book is even better.
Wonderful book. The reviews call it "haunting" and that is honestly the best word I can muster to describe the story. Explored aspects of Afghani culture I'd never been exposed to before. Wonderfully written, beautiful story of tragedy and family.

I kept hearing good things about this book, and everyone kept telling me I would love it. They were right--The Kite Runner by far lived up to its reputation. The author's writing style is magical--he seamlessly takes you to another world, full of beauty, heartbreak, violence, and triumph. He also did a flawless job of helping the reader feel what the characters felt, whether it was guilt, happiness, or sadness. I couldn't put this book down. I absolutely loved it.

This book was magnificent! It embodied every single emotion, value and lesson possible!! As an American, it was humbling. As a human being, it teaches so much...the value of friendship and loyalty, the horror of guilt and betrayal, and most importantly the power of redemption!!! Although it was set in Afghanistan (which added to the dramticism and taught me plenty) this story applies to any and every culture, illustrating that we all have something to fight for, honor, appreciate and believe in!!!!! Verry powerful read!!! Still contemplating whether to relinquish it to my bookshelf or keep it forever!

What an amazing book. A story of love, self hatred and redemption. This story comes from the heart and is reads like poetry. Destined to become a true classic, I found this book one of the finest pieces of literature I have read in many years. Its themes transcend all races religions and creeds. This should be a must read for every college student, and should be on every member's wish list. Hosseini's writing abilities stand leagues above his peers in the literary world today. Absolutely breathtaking.

Story of a young man from Afghanistan, what it was like growing up there in the 70's and then fleeing to America during the turmoil and wars. Also a story of love, betrayal, forgiveness and hope. I enjoyed the book for its richness of cultural detail and because I felt totally immersed in Amir's world, although I have to admit that his constant reference to his shame and cowardliness etc. grew old and wearying after awhile. The ending was actually good--I was worried I'd be disappointed, as so many books seem to do at the ending lately--and I enjoyed the book. Not as outstanding as the hype would have you believe, but still a great read.

On 3 different occasions, complete strangers had told me that this was their favorite book. Like many others have said...this is not the type of book I would normally read. This is a very good book. The story takes place throughout the lives of a prosperous family in Afghanistan and the family who worked as servants for the family. The story reveals so many of the horrors of a nation scarred by years of war with Russia and then the rise of the Taliban after the war. It also reveals much about childhood relationships and the guilt harbored by one of the characters over not helping his friend when a terrible tragedy occurs. This is not a book just for men or just for women. It is a great book for anyone wanting to read about the human condition in the face of adversity. It also gives a great first person insight into the conditions of a country in turmoil.

At times shocking, at times almost too unbearable to read, The Kite Runner tells a story without dancing around issues or behavior, despite how questionable. I wasn't sure I would enjoy the book, but I found myself entranced by the world the Kite Runner created of Afghanistan in the 1970s, and shocked and aggrieved at the portrait of modern-day Afghanistan. This book opened my eyes to a culture, despite it's fictional account, and I found myself emotionally involved in the struggle of Amir to find and earn forgiveness.

An insightful, thoughtful, disturbing story of a man returning to his childhood home on a mission of integrity and personal redemption. Not only did this book open my eyes to the history of Afghanistan and the Taliban from an Afghan's point of view, but it gave me a sense of hope that perhaps one truly can redeem oneself from a horrible mistake, even if one cannot change the past.

This was an amazing book. Beautifully written, and one that REALLY takes you out of your reading "comfort zone". If you've been mostly sticking to mindless chick-lit (I'm guilty as well), this book snaps you back to reality. Some of the things that happen are so terribly sad you just want to burst into tears at the idea that humans could treat each other that way. But at the same time, you're addicted and can't stop reading. Such a sad story but such an amazing tale. I really feel that with everything that's happened in the Middle East, everyone should read this book. You hear stories on the news and in print of the horrors and massacres that have happened over there but this brings it much closer to home. An excellent, sad, horrifying, beautiful, REAL, novel.

HOLY COW!!! What a book!!! When everyone was talking about this book and how awesome it was and I thought to myself ... ehhhhh. I couldn't have been more wrong ... I am SOOOOOO glad that I gave it a chance. I pretty much cried throughout the entire book ... I literally COULD NOT put this book down. I read it in 2 days and NO housework got done at all. With every page that I turned, with tears streaming down my face, I kept thinking to myself that there HAS to be a happy bit coming but there never was (I did laugh out loud at one point though and it was at a time when you really needed to have a bit of comic relief). Beautifully written and very smooth flowing. I would HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend that you read this book, you won't be disappointed.
I also watched the movie after I finished the book, and although the movie was okay ... as usual, it didn't hold a candle to the book. I can't wait to read his second book, A Thousand Splendid Suns.

The Kite Runner took me through the whole spectrum of emotions, but mostly sadness and anger. It was a very intimate look into a world I knew very little about. It really made me stop and think about family, culture, and heritage, and what it means to me. While it's not an easy book to read in the sense that it's often brutal and heartbreaking, it's definitely worth it. For a work of fiction, I found there to be a lot of honesty and truth in it.

This book is absolutely unbelievable. I sobbed at several parts, and I could barely put it down. This is a must-read. Absolutely. I would post my copy, but I am not getting rid of it; it was so good that I will keep it to lend out to friends.

This book almost feels like multiple books in one because as the main character grows and matures, both his station in life and his perspective on things change. As with Khaled Hosseini's other popular book "A Thousand Splendid Suns," this story really focuses on the relationships between characters, specifically the main character trying to come to terms with what his relationship with his father was really like and his relationship with another young man his age (sometimes he considers this character a friend, other times just the son of a servant). This was a tough read due to what happens to one of the characters early on in the book, but it is a very worthwhile read! If you enjoyed "A Thousand Splendid Suns," you will enjoy this!

One of the best books I have ever read, and I have read thousands. I actually spent the day reading this instead of teaching. I gave my students a "reading" day so that I could finish it. Heart wrenching, vivid, mind opening. My 14 yo daughter actually recommended it and said that it changed her view of others. It is obviously a life-changing book.

Who is this man who wrote this book Khaled Hosseini? I had never heard of him and now i want to read everything he has written. To look into this authors eyes would be to look into his heart. He has put it all down on pages for the world to meet him. I can't find the words to explain how wonderful this book is. I did not want it to end. I grew attached to the people in this story, so sad and so profound. I am fortunate to live where i do and this book is a real eye opener. The secret kept that ruined lives and the heart that kept the secret pays dearly. This book will stay in your mind for quite awhile after you have finished reading.

I loved this novel. It was also suggested by my book club, and I am so very glad it was. The novel is moving, sad, honest, and a fascinating portrayal of the life of young boys. Hosseini's use of language is wonderful. Keep the tissues handy, as some of the scenes are difficult and heart-breaking. There is some joy in the novel, though, it's not just a sad story.

An extremely well-written account of life in Afghanistan through the rise of the Taliban and an ultimate escape through the mountains. While the horrors of the Taliban reign are essential to the story, much is left (fortunately for most readers) to the imagination. It follows the growth of a moderately wealthy youngster and his relationship with the son of his fathers servant. It is a conflict of caste, trust, and loyalty.

This book is a very slow read. It must be read slowly for several reasons. First, the text is so richly woven that the reader must relish every word. Second, the story is set mainly in Afghanistan, and the character names, locations, and such are true to their area. These names slowed me down simply because they were different than the English with which I am familiar. I learned a great deal about the Afghan people, their beliefs and customs, as well as their often horrendous circumstances through which they must endure just in able to survive.

WOW!!! This was quite a book. At first, I thought, okay, it's well written but when is something going to happen? But as you get into the book and into the lives of the characters, you can't stop reading. A book about friends, family, trust, betrayal, surrival and love, this book takes you through the shear joy of triumph of the simple things in life to the frightening things some have done in order to survive the wickedness of others. Beautifully written and I would put it as a MUST READ.

I very much enjoyed this book, not just for its gritty but real story but for its art--it is sparely written, every word has meaning and purpose, and there is not an ounce of verbiage or detail that is not germane to the story. Having come to read it a bit late in its lifespan--it is already, at April, 08, a movie adaptation--I was not sure it would hold up to the buzz about it or its popular reputation, but it does. I reccomend this book highly.

Destined to become a modern classic, Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner is half a coming-of-age tale about a young boy looking for his father's acceptance and half a novel about atonement and cultural conflict. As a young boy growing up in Afghanistan in the seventies, Amir is a disappointment to his father. His mother died giving birth to him, and there is a mild undercurrent of resentment on his father's part because of this. Amir is a sensitive and creative lad, scholarly rather than athletic, and pacifist rather than assertive. His one true friend is Hassan, the son of his father's servant. The relationship between Amir and Hassan is deep and complicated; while Amir truly loves Hassan, he is also ashamed to be with him in public because Hassan is illiterate, an ethnic minority, and deformed with a harelip.
The turning point of the novel comes with the region's annual kite fighting competition. In kite fighting, the goal is to fly your kite so that your string cuts your competitor's string, with the last kite flying as the winner. The children act as "kite runners," who go and retrieve the broken kites. Amir enters the competition with Hassan as his runner. When Hassan does not return from running a kite, Amir goes to look for him and finds Hassan being assaulted by several boys in an alley. Rather than fighting for his friend, Amir simply watches unseen. Hassan is ashamed from the assault while Amir is ashamed for doing nothing; as a result, the two drift apart and are eventually separated after Hassan is accused of stealing.
In the second half of the novel, Amir is living in the United States with his father when he gets a phone call from an old friend of his father's in Afghanistan. He tells Amir to return to Afghanistan right away, as he is very sick and needs Amir's help very badly to do something. Amir leaves his wife to go see what his father's friend wants and is told a startling secret. The revelation of this secret drives the plot for the rest of the book, and, while the ending may not be "happy", it is hopeful.

As I said above, this book will definitely make its way into the English canon because of the many profound themes it contains. The twists are well-plotted and logical, but not obvious. This is one of those books where you think back to what happened earlier and go, "Oh, that's why he said it that way." There's plenty of action to keep readers engaged and aware that the plot is moving. Issues of abandonment and culture are present throughout the book and connect the many plot points.
There are parts of the book that are violent and graphic, but never simply for shock value. If you are a reader of serious fiction, you will not be disappointed by this book.

Afgahnistan as seen through one child in one neighborhood at one time in the 20th Century. This novel is an amazing child's eye view of a family, a town, a country, a world we all share. In the end, living care-fully is about being as kind to one another as we can despite chaos and absurdities. When we rescue another we rescue ourselves: chase a kite, chase life, chase down love.

Mr. Hosseini has a very easily read style. His sentences and wording are simple and flow quite well, and he writes Amir's character as if he were Amir himself. In fact, I wondered throughout the book how much of Amir's story was really his. Because of this style I was hooked instantly, hardly able to put the book down and the tragedy that unfolds only makes the page turning more addicting.
While I may not have learned many facts about Afghanistan besides the names of its leaders and its various occupations, I have a great appreciation for how its people lived in these times. The author does a great job of depicting a nation whole with stable traditions going to a broken nation living in constant fear. It makes for a melancholy yet riveting reading experience.
The overall story of this book is a bit far fetched with a good amount of cliché. I don't want to spoil anything with specifics, but we have many familiar themes to drama such as childhood tormenters, dying family members, sterile wives and many more. Yet, the amount of heart in the story overshadows the conventional. The story of Amir and Hassan as friends and brothers is the soul and heart of The Kite Runner. The loyalty in their friendship is more powerful than the terror and tragedy that surrounds them and that is the focus of this book, I think.
By the end, I was left saddened by this book and yet wanting more. While it wasn't a revolutionary read, it offers some good insight into Afghanistan and some entertaining fictional drama. Kite Runner is a good read for anyone and I will look forward to reading more from Mr. Hosseini.

This is the BEST book I have read in quite sometime. I kept putting off purchasing it as I thought it was going to be political. But a friend said to get it. It was incredible and a look into lives in a devastated country as well as the lives of two young boys torn by cultural mores. This book fast became one of my favorites. It was a very eye-opening look at a different culture gave me a whole new outlook. Extremely well written and almost poetic in its descriptions and similes. If you haven't read it, get it!!!

To be honest, I only read this book because I saw it EVERYWHERE for quite some time and felt that I should probably check it out. I was glad I did (as is often the case with books like that) because I found it to be a thought-provoking, involving and âeducationalâ story that I think many Americans should read to get a better understanding of the life and people in Afghanistan. Although I thought some of the structure of the novel was a little too âcoincidentalâ and tidy, I didn't mind too much. One of the parts that I found most affecting was how Baba and his life changed after coming to America. It reminded me a little bit of âHouse of Sand and Fogâ in that immigrants who are powerful and have professional careers in their own countries come to America and work at low-paying, low skilled jobs. Definitely recommended!

A very good read. The main character is a hard one to love, he is complex, but yet so normal. You can almost feel his emotions and understand them, even if you don't agree with his reactions.
I actually read this book after reading "A Thousand Splendid Suns" also written by Khaled Hosseini. I think it was slightly better than "The Kite Runner"

This is one of the best books i have ever read. It's a compelling story and it doesn't become boring or drags at any point. The author gives just the right amount of details, about the country and the people without making you feel overwhelmed with details. Greatly written.

This book was much hyped in various places, but I found it terrible. Frankly, after not quite one third of the way through it, I stopped reading. The prose isn't that good, the story is disjoint and unclear (as in, there's no point that I can see to it), and the main character isn't someone I can remotely relate to in any way. In fact, he's repulsive. So repulsive that reading about him is downright unpleasant.
In the end, I have no idea why this book was so popular. I'll go read other things that I actually enjoy as opposed to this.

If I hadn't known this was a novel, I would have thought it was an autobiography. It sounded sooooo real and soooo personal! A great book and one that you won't soon forget.

Finally...a book that was unpredictable and not sappy! Lately I have been so disappointed with highly recommended books because by atleast the middle of the book I had the ending figured out! This certainly was not the case here! You can foresee some developments but some are a total surprise! The ending was not sappy which I sincerely appreciated. In places it is horrific and sad, but real and definitely worth reading! I was certainly awakened to historical and cultural facts that I never would have learned otherwise! I was very well pleased and would definitely recommend this to anyone! I am looking forward to his next book!!!!

I really found this book to be a great story about two boys who live in Afghanistan and their friendship and I really enjoyed reading the part about the flying of the kites.I also found this book to be sad in some parts.I think the author did a great job in telling of this story.

I ignored this book for a long time as it looked like a so-so read, and to be pushed as part of Oprah's book club, made me even more hesitant. Oh foolish me! This book held me captivated. I had a love/hate relationship with it. I hated what happens to some of the characters, and how it affected them all. At the same time, I couldn't put it down, as I HAD to see what happened to those characters next. There were many twists and turns I didn't see coming and was blindsided by an action one of the characters took. This is a fantastic read, and should be on everyone's list of books to read this year.

I lacked the knowledge of the Afghani way of life, including the country's revolution and invasion by Russia, to the present day (June 2009). This book really opened my eyes to the cruelty they endure. The country's history is entwined in the story of a young man and the cruelty (and love) he bestows on his friend. Wow! A great read!

This book surprised me. I had heard it was so good but put off reading it. Once I started it, I quickly learned why people were so moved by it. It really grabs you and amazes you with the intricacies of a foreign culture. I don't know much about the people of Afghanistan and it was very interesting to feel immersed in the culture and language of the people through this book. The author really takes you there with him. The story itself is also very moving!

I read this book on a recommendation by a friend. It is not usually my type of book and I was very skeptical. However, after reading it I was amazed. This was an awesome book and very well written. I went on to buy the next book "A Thousand Splendid Suns" and also was not disappointed in it either. This book was a keeper for me and I would highly recommend it. It will definately make you think.

I loved this book. The author really makes you hate the main character but in the end he redeems himself. I found this story fascinating. The author does a great job of portraying Afghanistan and the struggles that occurred there. The book mainly focuses on the life of two small boys who grow up in the same household as best friends but there is a lot going on between the relationship between the boys and their fathers. The mothers are both out of the picture. This books deals with the themes of jealousy and betrayal. A great read!

What an exceptional book! I could not put this book down! It gave me a whole new appreciation for my life in the U.S. I would recommend this book for everyone to read. I really like Hosseini's writing style and the way he wrote the story. Normally, I would not read a story of this type. I can't wait to read more of his books. After reading "A Thousand Splendid Suns," I had an idea of the hardship painted in this story. What I wasn't prepared for was the inner turmoil and "weight" I would feel for the characters in this book. I felt dissappointed, angry and proud of every one of the main characters at some point. A very well-written novel that strikes you as so real that it could be nonfiction. The story is not formulaic or predictable and the protagonist is the most fallibly human character I've seen portrayed. An engrossing view of Afghan culture, but more a book about human struggles. Emotionally charged and somber. I can't say that I completely enjoyed this book, but I'm glad to have experienced it.

I thought this book was amazing - at first, I thought it would be difficult to follow as the text is peppered with language that is foreign to me, but after the first few pages I felt so in tune to the characters and the storyline. I love a book that gives you the ability to clearly visualize the characters, the culture and scenery, so you feel you are connected. I feel like I was not only entertained, but I learned something without feeling this was a history lesson. I felt there was no boring "down time" in this book, it moved seamlessly from one chapter to the next and kept my interest the whole time. A few times I was a bit put off by some of the events, a small bit of language, a sexual assault on a young boy, but as troubling as those events are, they are not gratuitous - they have meaning in the story. Without giving too much away, I also like that the story is true to life in a way - the ending is neither too tragic not too happy, yet at the same time it is both.

The story was wonderful and I enjoyed following a young man from his earliest years until he became a married man. This is a heartwarming story you won't forget. My aunt sent this book in a box of books for my children, I dont know if she sent it on purpose or not. I said that to say this: Im like someone who has a substance abuse problem, only MY substance is books. I didnt have anything on hand to read at the time, so I flipped through the box I previously mentioned, and the title caught my eye. I had heard the title somewhere, I just couldnt place it. After reading the back cover, I was not impressed, but knew it wasnt a kids book, so I lifted it for me anyway. I have to say after the first chapter, I was only mildly interested, then after the third and forth chapters, I couldnt put this book down. I read this book in just a few short hours much to the annoyance of my kids, because I was ignoring them. That is just how great this book was. A MUST READ!!!

THE KITE RUNNER is a beautiful story written by Khaled Hosseini (not to mention the first Afghan book to be written in English). The novel follows Amir , a boy living in Afghanistan with his father, Baba. The two have been living by themselves since Amir's mother died during childbirth. Well, not really alone. The servant, Ali, and his son, Hassan, live in a hut in the backyard. While they may be servants, Baba looks to them as family. Hassan and Amir grow up together and became friends.
As a child, Amir was always troubled. He felt that he didn't have his father's love, so he was constantly trying to win that love. Amir easily got jealous of Hassan, because Amir felt his father loved Hassan more, since Hassan was such a great athlete and such an honest person. But one day Amir witnesses an injustice done to Hassan, and although Amir could've stopped it from happening, he didn't.
Shortly afterwards Ali and Hassan leave, even though Baba pleads for them to stay. Amir watches as Hassan and Ali climb into their Mercedes and drive off, never to be seen by them again. Soon after that, Amir and Baba escape to the United States to get away from the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
There, Amir graduated high school and went to junior college to become a writer. Amir ended up marrying a nice, pretty woman named Soraya. Shortly after the wedding, Baba dies of cancer. Amir is even more depressed when Soraya and he find out that they can't conceive a child.
Amir and Soraya keep on living life and the years passed. They led normal lives; he as a writer she as a teacher. They lived in a comfortable house with a dog. But one day, Amir's past caught up to him. He received a phone call from an old family friend, Rahim Khan, asking Amir to come to Pakistan.
Amir arrives in Pakistan to see his old friend close to death. But that's not why Khan asked Amir to come. The fact is that Hassan was killed by the Taliban a few months ago, along with his wife. The two left behind their son, Sohrab, who is living in an Afghan orphanage. Khan asks Amir to go find the boy and bring him back to Pakistan so he can live with a nice couple and get away from all of the death and destruction the Taliban has created in Afghanistan.

I almost didn't give this book a chance, I usually read chick-lit. Oh boy am I glad I did crack it open by maybe the 3rd chapter I was hooked and couldn't put it down. Very well written, and kept me reading well into the night.

I was very moved by this book. As I read the book and it took its twists and turns that I could never predict, my emotions changed with it. The book so affected me that sometimes I would come away with a stomach ache and have such a deep sense of sadness. It is a rare book that is still with me after I put it down. This book is hauntingly thought provoking. One third of the way in I almost stopped reading because I was so caught up in the characters' lives it pained me to read their tragedies. I had some comfort in thinking this was supposed to be fiction. The voice in my head telling me reality is often much worse was temporary silenced. There is some relief reading how the characters come full circle (if maybe a little predictably) and there are many lessons to be learned along the way. It shows us how single decisions can affect our lives forever. That we all have our inner weaknesses that riddle us with guilt and make us do the things we do. I don't think I can read another serious novel for a while though as I still haven't clear my head of this story.

I honestly did not expect to like this book as much as I did. It was highly recommended to me, but I just didn't think it would be my type of story. I loved it! It is a book with a message about love, family, relationships, and even the forces of good and evil. The Kite Runner touched my heart and soul! I will never forget it.

I'm late to the party -- finally read The Kite Runner. It is a superb book through which I learned a lot about Afghan culture and modern Afghan history. The real appeal of the book, for me, was in the universal themes it addressed: friendship, betrayal, guilt, family, fathers and sons, and redemption. The characters of Amir and Hassan are unforgettable. It is a beautifully written book, destined to become a modern classic.

Just finished reading this book. Very well written. Story unfolds without you ever guessing what happens next. I gleaned a new appreciation for the Afghan people and the ravage of war on their lives and country. Beautiful story of a boy's coming of age and of redemption. Also the story depicts how political refugees often give up their social and professional status to immigrate to the USA.

This book is a lyrical and moving as expected. Hosseini's visual imagery of life in pre-war Afghanistan is a feast of color and sound and taste and action. The characters are richly drawn, their situations at once foreign to an American woman and yet as familiar as the human race. The relationships, the effects of war, the inhumanity of a world where servitude by race is accepted and the skew of human dealings with one another under that system... wow. This was so powerful.

This is the best fictional book I have read in 2007. The author is able to bring the characters to life in such a way that you feel your are actually observing the story as it takes place. You get a clear impression of what it was like in Afgahnistan before the Russians invaded and after the Taliban took over. The trauma that takes place is so powerful that I had to put it down at one point because I was overwhelmed with emotions. The ending, although not necessarily "happy", is hopeful.

I especially like to read about life in other countries and in different eras. In part one, Hosseini describes the Afghanistan of his protagonist's childhood as a lovely place, rich in culture and vivid with colors; it unfolds like a beautiful tapestry. The relationships between young protagonist Amir and his friend/servant Hassan as well as his father, while complicated, are compelling and 3-dimensional. Amir is a conflicted, and at times unappealing character, yet the author allows him to hold on to the readers' attention and even sympathy. The story in part one is believable, the writing is crisp, and the plot moves along at a fast clip. I was very drawn in to reading about these folks' lives in a well-to-do suburb of Kabul circa 1970s.
Unfortunately, their beloved country is invaded and Amir and his father escape to settle in the U.S. They remake their lives rather humbly in Fremont, CA (home of the largest population of Afghans in America). Fremont in real life is actually nowhere near as dreary as the author describes, and part two of the book slows to a crawl.
In part three, Amir is now in his thirties and living in San Francisco with his barren wife when he gets an urgent call to visit an old family friend who has relocated to Pakistan. The friend, now dying, urges Amir to return to war-torn, Taliban controlled Kabul to right the wrongs of his childhood. Part three is a disappointment as Amir journeys to save a young boy from the ravaged homeland; the author uses many unbelievable plot devices and concocts fantastic coincidences to get through this section. Section three also unfortunately contains the story's crudest, most one-dimensional characters, whose actions are borderline cartoon-like. We had to read this as an independent reading project in my English class, and I have to say, I was quite surprised that they selected a book with such graphic content to be a required school read. Some of the scenes were extremely graphic, so if you are someone who is bothered by that I would not recommend it.
That being said, I thought it was fantastic. I could not put it down. There are many twists that keep you guessing throughout the entire story. Great read.

Reading this book was a raw and powerful experience. I can not believe this is Hosseini's debut novel. His talent is immense. I suddenly have an interest in Afghanistan since finishing this book. Parts of this book gave me nightmares and also made me cry and curse out loud. It is haunting and unforgettable.
Okay, I didn't like the pivotal event in the book, but I really didn't like that the main character in the book never caught on. He had his whole life to make up for his mistake. He never does it. Not really. He doesn't see that he can redeem himself. He doesn't take his opportunities. Wow! What a tough choice.

Very moving, an interesting glimpse into the life of an upper-class family in Afghanistan removed from grace after the fall of the Afghanistan monarch in the '70s. As they rebuild their lives in America, memories of the priveledged past conflict with a present that includes working-class jobs, flea markets, and the father's battle with cancer. However, the book's main theme deals with the narrator's ever-present struggle to win his father's love and respect, and the trials he endures while trying to do so.

I first read this book to find out more about life in Afghanistan. I found the story well-written and would recommend it. I did not like it as well as A Thousand Splendid Suns (perhaps because that was about women and friendship/hardship) but it was still interesting. I cried my eyes out when I saw the movie, which prompted me to read the book. I cried my eyes out again. Such a poignant story. For all the emotion, I never felt that Hosseini was laying it on. Some parts of the story are brutal to read, but it is well crafted. It offers insight into a place (Afghanistan) that most of us only know from recent headlines. It has motivated me to learn more about Afghanistan, its history and cultures.

This book drew me in and kept me captive till the end, and strangely enough, it wasn't one that I thought I would enjoy....I was so wrong! The main character is difficult to empathize with, he is selfish, self-centered and not really very likeable....but still the story draws you in....and the imagery is stunning in it's detail. A truly good book has the ability to evoke many emotions adn reactions from it's reader...and this one doesnt' fail. A wonderful journey to embark upon....

This was a wonderful book, extremely engrossing. I read it straight through in 2 days, I couldn't put it down! But I feel I must warn future readers, that this book does have several sections of graphic descriptions. I just wanted to let everyone know, just in case you're sensitive to that type of material.

Wonderful, this book is gripping. Its sad and makes you think about life and the relationships that you hold in it, the actions that you take and the conquiences that they produce.
A great book I could not put down. Also gave another perspective of the war torn middle east. I liked the history aspect of it and how the author moved through the years of Afghanistan's political movements. Although because it does move through so many years I got a little bit confused between some of the minor characters.
This book was just one of those that I couldn't put down. It was beautifully and poignantly written. I immediately read A Thousand Splendid Suns upon completing this one and wish that Hosseini had more for me to devour. He is a gifted writer.

This is not my usual type of book, but this audio was given as a present to me, so I listened. I'm so glad I did. I loved it! The story moved me and was very enjoyable.
Beautifully written. An emotional read but one that enlightens you on the old and new Afghanistan.

This book has simply become an all-time favorite of mine. It's not often when a reader comes across an author who can pull on your heart strings. Hosseini did an excellent job enabling the reader to relate to the characters. Simply a fantastic book. Be sure to also read Hossenini's other book, "A Thousand Splendid Suns".
I liked this book, and it opened up a whole range of emotions for me. It wasn't an easy read for me because of the frustration, anger, and heartbreak it evoked. The core of it all delves into our human nature where jealousy, loyalty, betrayal, honesty, and the need for acceptance exists.
As a person that doesn't have much knowledge of Afghanistan and its culture, it was fairly interesting to get a glimpse into that world. However, at times, because of that, it made for a slower read for me. I found myself getting tripped up on the addition of a foreign language so that things didn't flow as smoothly as I'd have liked. But, I suppose in a way it did add to the "atmosphere" of the story and make you feel that you were there.
As for the storyline, there were a couple of surprising twists I didn't see coming, but toward the end it became quite predictable.
I felt the characters were well developed which always adds a deeper experience with the book. The character of Hassan continuously tugged at my heart, and I struggled with the heartbreak I felt for him. As always, I was pulling for the underdog, and he will remain one of those characters that sticks with me for a long time.

This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. I don't usually read historical fiction, but this novel set in Afghanistan really moved me. I kept thinking about this book long after I read it!
Wow, really good. I tend to shy away from bestsellers in real books because there are just so many other great books that aren't bestsellers out there. But, of course there is a reason this one is so well known and loved. And, it was really the perfect audiobook. Read by the author, you get the infliction of the voices in Farsi-turned-English speaking like only someone who knows that life can do.
This is my second Hosseini book and probably not my last. Great pace and while there is tragedy and love and loyalty, it isn't your usual typical story and keeps you pulled in to the very last bit. Intensely moving. Afghanistan has suffered so much. Good for understanding immigrants to USA, what they may have been through, cultural aspects of make-up and behavior.

Politics and current events are just really not my thing so this book was doomed with me from the beginning. Add in the fact that the main character is a complete douche and you get a book with 1 star. I upped it to 2 just because the writing was good and it wasn't hard to read. And, if it were possible, I may have added 1/2 a star for the twist that happened and the course of events afterwards. Overall, an ok read. Not sure it's worth the hype that was given to it, but an ok book.
Interesting story line. Was able to learn a bit about another culture. Character developlement was fantastic. I wanted to keep reading for find out what happened to everyone. Will definetly read more by this author.

There are but a handful of books that I would rate as Outstanding. This is amongst the few. I have had this book on my shelf for nearly two years but I could not bring myself to even start reading it. I don't know what I thought the book would be, but it was not that at all. I couldn't put it down. Wasn't sure I like this kinds of book, but it held from the beginning to end.
I really enjoyed this author's writing style. Told from a child's point of view first, as he grows up into adulthood. It draws you in, makes you care about each of the characters, and doesn't leave you hanging. With the many experiences of the main character, gives you a good idea of what it was like living in the middle east (before and after the war) without feeling like a drawn-out text book. Sentimental story will make you both smile and shed a tear, yet you don't feel manipulated because you care about the characters so much.
This book surprised me as the more I read the better it became. Truly a book you will long remember. I am reading the second book from this author. They say he has passed on and only has three books. I will surely read all three. A good read.

I read this and found it to be very touching as well as informative. I looked up the names of one of the places in the book to see if the events it the book were historical or just fiction. This particular event was unfortunately quite real. This just added to the story for me. A great read!

Great character descriptions. They were so good that I felt like long lost friends were moving away when the book ended. And maybe most interestingly, this is the first book I've read where I felt like I had a good idea of what it was like to be a boy and the expectations of becoming a man. It was an eye-opener for me. Everything else about the book has been given in the previous million reviews. :) It's a fantastic book that reads beautifully.
Undoubtedly an exceptional book. However, if you are a person who does not like reading about child abuse and child rape, there are images in here that will haunt you. I just find it too disturbing to read really hard core descriptions of child abuse. But if you can overlook that, the history and education you gain from this read is amazing. Or, you could read 'Three Cups of Tea' for great education AND an uplifting read.

True to the style of his other book - A Thousand Splendid Suns - the author reveals his intimate knowledge of the reality of life as an Afghan during the last 30 years. The story tells the tortured tale of one man and his relationships with father, servants, brothers, and friends. The culture of the Afghan people is apparent as is the the brutality of the two political regimes that occupied Afghanistan during that time frame. A good read in the context of the current events there today.
Khaled Hosseini takes you to another place. Afghanistan is shown to you as most have not seen or at the least to do not recognize of the place today. It is brutal and honest and a great book.
This book was full of great characters, plot, and real emotions. I cried from happiness and joy. It also made me question how I live my life and how I see the world, which I believe is the job of all novels.
I gave it 4 and a half stars because while most of the story's dramatic parts were believeable, there was one part that I did not believe. I will not go into detail because I dont want to spoil any parts for future readers...

Oh man, I WANTED to like this book because everybody told me how good it was. I was angry at myself for forcing myself to finish reading the book. I totally disliked the main character and I hated the way the book ended. Now I am reluctant to read anything else by Mr. Hosseini.

I found this book interesting but not riveting. It was interesting in the sense of giving the reader a small insight into Afghanistan way of life. This book was very easy to put down and come back to read some more a week later. The writing was good don't get me wrong but the story isn't something that held my interest in the I can't put this book down until I'm done with it way. i will say I can see where some people find it riveting "Newsday" or powerful "the Washington Post Book World" but then I'm never "politically correct" This book is not for everyone but if you are "politically correct" you will love this book. If you enjoy learning about other cultures you will find this book interesting. (I was a humanities major in college) Happy reading!
A wonderful read, a heartbreaking story, this touches your soul and the lives of everyone in it will stay with you for a long time. I highly recommend this book to any reader. I felt every emotion through out the pages of this well-written novel. I loved it. One to always keep on the shelf and occasionally lend it to someone, but get it back. The only improvement would be if it were a true story.

I guess everyone had read this book by now, but if you haven't, do it now! This book and the author's second novel are amazing. What you learn about the culture of Afghanistan is worth the trouble, and you have the added bonus of a story that will draw you in immediately.
For those who have lived in the Mideast this will ring true. For those who need redemption, this will ring true. Sad, poignant, unforgettable.

An enriching read, but I had problems with the plot. I suppose some contrivance is necessary to move the narrative along, but I felt the author manipulated events excessively to make his point.
I can't wait to read his next book. this book has heart and he writes much better than I can but have to be a little critical of his forshadowing. It was as if he was trying to hard to tie things together, some of which could have been left out.However this was a really enjoyable book.

Meh . . . it was okay. A lot of media over-hype, I thought. I finished it, but I won't go desparately looking for another book by this author.
I would have never read this book but a friend gave it to me and several others said I should read. I am so glad that I did read it because this is one of those books that changes your perspective of life. All I can really say is that i held it together all the way through the book but as I read the last chapter, the tears started pouring down. Someday I will tell my dear friends and maybe even children that they should pick up and read this book.

I read the Kite Runner because I have heard a lot of great things about it over the years. I was curious to see what all the hubbub was about. I actually listened to it on audio book; the audio book is read by the author and was fairly well done. Overall I thought it was an interesting book and pretty well written.

After a significant brutal event that happens to Hassan, him and Amir are driven apart. As violence increases in Kabul, Amir and his father flee first to Pakistan and then to America. What follows is then a story of Amir and his life in America. Eventually Amir's past comes back to haunt him and he is called back to Pakistan to deal with some unfinished business.
I will say that first of all this isn't a comfortable or happy read; there are a number of heartbreaking and extremely brutal events that happen in this book. It is a decently written look into Afghan culture and into how the political events that happened there affected the citizens of Kabul. The characters are fairly engaging if not likable; Amir is mostly a brat throughout the story...although he kind of redeems himself in the end. Hassan is at times so passive you want to smack him; but maybe that was just me.
There were some things that really struck me with this book. I found it fascinating how similar Afghan culture was to American culture before all of the violence started; in this I mean they had winter break from school (rather than summer), children looked up to the major holidays where they got presents, there were bullies, and Amir strives for the acceptance of his father. The Afghan people described in this book are just like any other people; that is until the Taliban take over.
There were also a number of things I didn't especially enjoy about this book. For example the author gets rather graphic about rape scenes, torture, and beatings; but veers away from describing any tender scenes between husband and wife or family members. This could be a cultural tendency, especially since Amir was raised in the absence of any women. Still it was like the author did his best to emphasis the torture and pain these people went through without really spending much time on the tenderness and love that was also present. It was almost like the author was going for maximum shock value, not a balanced story.
The role of women in this book is fairly truncated; I understand women don't have a ton of pull in Afghan culture and Amir was raised in an absence of women, but it would have been nice to see more women and how the events in Kabul and immigration to America affected them. Also the book was a bit inconsistent both in time-frame and pacing. Amir goes back and forth between present and past often, and at times it is difficult to figure out where in his life timeline you are for the story he is telling. There are also periods in the book where nothing much happens and then periods where things rush past.
Overall I liked the book for the peek it gives you into Afghan culture. I thought the writing was okay, the characters engaging but only marginally likable, and the pacing a bit inconsistent. This is not a feel good book; mostly it is just really depressing how inhumane humanity can get. I would recommend reading this book if you want a better understanding of Afghanistan with characters that are somewhat engaging. I would like to read Hosseini's A Thousand Splendid Suns at some point; it sounds like that book deals more with women in Afghan culture. I also thought that Swallows of Kabul was better written and gave a better look at what life was like under the Taliban; this books kind of misses some of that because Amir is in America for that portion of time. So, if you are more interested in Afghanistan under Taliban rule I would read that book.

I will say that first of all this isn't a comfortable or happy read; there are a number of heartbreaking and extremely brutal events that happen in this book. It is a decently written look into Afghan culture and into how the political events that happened there affected the citizens of Kabul. The characters are fairly engaging if not likable; Amir is mostly a brat throughout the story...although he kind of redeems himself in the end. Hassan is at times so passive you want to smack him; but maybe that was just me.
There were some things that really struck me with this book. I found it fascinating how similar Afghan culture was to American culture before all of the violence started; in this I mean they had winter break from school (rather than summer), children looked up to the major holidays where they got presents, there were bullies, and Amir strives for the acceptance of his father. The Afghan people described in this book are just like any other people; that is until the Taliban take over.
There were also a number of things I didn't especially enjoy about this book. For example the author gets rather graphic about rape scenes, torture, and beatings; but veers away from describing any tender scenes between husband and wife or family members. This could be a cultural tendency, especially since Amir was raised in the absence of any women. Still it was like the author did his best to emphasis the torture and pain these people went through without really spending much time on the tenderness and love that was also present. It was almost like the author was going for maximum shock value, not a balanced story.
The role of women in this book is fairly truncated; I understand women don't have a ton of pull in Afghan culture and Amir was raised in an absence of women, but it would have been nice to see more women and how the events in Kabul and immigration to America affected them. Also the book was a bit inconsistent both in time-frame and pacing. Amir goes back and forth between present and past often, and at times it is difficult to figure out where in his life timeline you are for the story he is telling. There are also periods in the book where nothing much happens and then periods where things rush past.
Overall I liked the book for the peek it gives you into Afghan culture. I thought the writing was okay, the characters engaging but only marginally likable, and the pacing a bit inconsistent. This is not a feel good book; mostly it is just really depressing how inhumane humanity can get. I would recommend reading this book if you want a better understanding of Afghanistan with characters that are somewhat engaging. I would like to read Hosseini's A Thousand Splendid Suns at some point; it sounds like that book deals more with women in Afghan culture. I also thought that Swallows of Kabul was better written and gave a better look at what life was like under the Taliban; this books kind of misses some of that because Amir is in America for that portion of time. So, if you are more interested in Afghanistan under Taliban rule I would read that book.
This is an excellent book. The story line which plays off the two main characters is both disturbing and challenging. Their codependency and depth of relationship intertwines with all the events and possibilities. It is a sensitively yet powerfully told tale of human nature and the ways we both succeed and fail in our life efforts.
I enjoyed the book but I read A Thousand Suns first so I have to say that made more of an impression on me. I felt after after A Thousand Suns, I would never look at the news about Kabul in the same way again, I would be able to relate more to the terrible things that go on in that country.

Incredible story - well, saga, really - about a man's childhood in Afghanistan and his eventual return to pay penance to his friend's memory.
This is one of the few books I'd give 5 stars for. Much better than I thought it would be. It's the story of two boys, Amir and Hassan, who come of age during the last peaceful days of the monarchy. Hassan is Amir's servant who is totally self-sacrificing as it concerns Amir and his family. Their friendship ends shortly after an incident done against Hassan that Amir just watches. Amir then begins to hate Hassan because of his own guilt. Throughout the book, Amir struggles with this guilt. To escape the Russian army's attack on Afghanistan, Amir and his father, Baba, imigrate to America. Baba, a successful businessman in Afghanistan, loses everything. Amir starts on his writing career and grows up. He is able to assuage his guilt when he is forced to return to Afghanistan to visit his dying "uncle". An incredible story written with stark prose.
Very Good Read
I found this book to be a very interesting and moving story about the troubles encountered by an Afghani boy. Some parts are almost hard to read because they are very vivid descriptions. I would highly recommend reading this intriguing book.

This book was unbelievable, I had no interest in it after reading the back cover, but after a friend's recommendation, I grudgingly started to read it. That only lasted through the first page or two, this story is heartbreaking and I could not put it down. I certainly hope this new author writes more.
I couldn't put it down, complex characters and I couldn't tell what was going to happen from one page to the next. A must have!

This is absolutely by far one of the best books I've ever read. The story is incredible. You will go into another world. Your heart will break for Hassan, you will hate Amir, but in the end you will come to love him and feel his pain. Such an incredible story!!! I can't believe I waited so long to read this book.

This is one of the most compelling and interesting books I have read in 2005. With the direct references to what life is like in Afghanistan today versus 20 years ago, one can fully understand the impact and devistation that has been forced on the people of Afghanistan. This book is a must read and I have already loaned my copy to several friends.
