Ellroy has a very distinct style-- it took me a few pages to get used to it but then I didn't want to put the book down. He doesn't pull punches: harsh language and imagery.

I read this book after seeing the movie and reading the screenplay. The difference are very interesting. The story in the book lasts for a span of five years and gets much deeper into the three main characters' (Jack V. Bud White and Ed Exley) lives and psyches. I recommend the book especially for those who enjoyed the movie. The writing style is quick paced with minimum setting description. Action packed!!
