This is truly and excellent example of si-fi fantasy. The characters are very well developed and so is the world building. It is the 1st of a trilogy and I went out and bought the 2nd one which was just as good.

This story took a while to get into, and by "a while," I mean about 150 pages. I almost gave up. Those 150-or-so pages provide a lot of context necessary for understanding the plot, and they also introduce quite a few characters, to the point where it's not always clear who the main storyline is following. Ultimately, though, I didn't give up, and I actually ended up liked it well enough to order the second book in the series.
