Canada Jack and his gang have been wreaking havoc both sides of the border, leaving a trail of grisly murders in their wake. Despite boss Billy Vail's warning not to follow Canada Jack if he flees to Canada, Longarm damns jurisdiction and goes after him anyway. Jurisdiction isn't the only thing Longarm has to worry about. He's careful to steer clear of the Mounties, in particular Crown Sergeant Foster. Foster and Longarm have a rivalry going back to the first book in the series. Longarm and Foster were after the same man then and Longarm double-crossed him, sending poor Foster back to Canada with the wrong dead owlhoot in the middle of summer. Longarm aims to get to Canada Jack first and take him back to the U.S.A. for a fair trial.
Of course, along the way Longarm meets several beautiful women and one of them damn near breaks his heart. A healthy chunk of the novel has Longarm traipsing through Canada but instead of being boring it is quite charming. I know Tabor Evans is a house name, and whoever wrote the early numbered books in the series really has a way of describing the past in a way that makes you feel like you are there. The imagery the author conjured up is amazing. A scene featuring buffalo is especially moving.
