I offer two stars for this book only because I love Preston & Child and just couldn't give only one star for the men who invented one of my favorites, Aloysius Pendergast!!

I like the Gideon character, a genius scientist, master thief, who is terminal, and one is always hoping he will find a cure. I even liked the beginning of the book where Gideon had to steal a page from The Book of Kells, displaying in NYC under extraordinary security and the imaginative way he completed the task.

They discover a treasure map hidden beneath the page and Gideon and a partner are assigned to search for a lotus flower that has the power to heal. They encounter savages, pirates, treasure hunters and monsters, all trying to kill them. Then, to top it all, one remaining Cyclops appears, and that was it for me. Too much syfy, ridiculous stuff!

The next book appears to be just as uncredible, it seems they go in search of an alien seed that grew in the ocean floor and has to be removed! I think I'll skip that one.

You'd better have your credibility blinders on while reading this thriller. I found the historical aspect of the plot ridiculous and the characterizations thin.

The book started out with a great premise but it went a bit sideways on the story line. Ended up being a violent,fire-filled story that was not what I expected. I will be less inclined to look for Preston and Child novels after this one.

Good plot, lots of action-perfect for that long flight.
