Love Mercy Johnson has been through a lot of heartache. Widowed for a year since her husband succumbed to cancer, still mourning the untimely loss of her son, and estranged from her granddaughters by a selfish daughter-in-law, she has managed to be content in the town of Morro Bay in central California. One day her middle granddaughter Rett comes into town, obviously running away from something, and though Love is thrilled to have a chance to know her she is uncertain how to deal with a moody 18-year-old. And her best friend Melina is troubled by a hidden past that suddenly threatens to destroy the peace she has found in this town.

It was a sweet little story with interesting characters, but although I was interested in finding out what happened I really couldn't connect with them. Fowler's writing style was a little disjointed, with an irritating gimmick of switching to a character's memories of the past to add a little suspense when a revelation is about to come. Character development was ok, and overall it was a pleasant read but not very substantial.

Really enjoyed this book. Loved how she brought in some of the Benni Harper characters, yet focused on new characters...that I want to see more of. This is suppose to be the start of a trilogy and I am looking forward to the next book.

Love Mercy Johnson has seen her fair share of heartbreak. A year after her husband's death, she still finds herself listening for his comforting laugh. But her life is satisfying in Morrow Bay, California, where she takes photographs for a regional magazine and helps her in-laws work the Johnson family's cattle ranch. With the help of her good friends, Love is trying to move on.

Long estranged from her grandchildren, Love has given up hope of ever seeing them again. Then her dreams of reconciliation come true when her eighteen-year-old granddaughter, Loretta Lynn "Rett" Johnson, unexpectedly shows up. Suddenly, Love's predictable life is completely disrupted.

Fresh from an embarrassing romantic entanglement, Rett, an aspiring songwriter, has hitchhiked across the country, lugging a prickly attitude, a broken heart, and a stolen banjo. Now grandmother and granddaughter must struggle to coexist while each confronts old resentments and hurts. When a family crisis forges an unexpected connection between the two grieving women, they must discover whether they can change not only their own lives but the lives of their loved ones for the better.
