Katherine Cassidy and Roan Devereaux are the main characters. Roan and Katherines father served in the Civil War together and Cassidy saved Roan by taking him to a hospital to be repaired instead of letting a war surgeon work on him.

Roan wants to buy a horse from Cassidy; he is on his way home to Louisiana after a long absence. Roan is worried about the reception his parents will offer. When he gets to Cassidys ranch, he finds that his friend is dead and his daughter Katherine is underwhelmed by Roans arrival.

From the run-down appearance of the ranch, Roan realizes Katherine could use some help and so he stays for an extended time.

Essentially, my only complaint is that this plot set up has been used many times before; the only change is that Roan takes Katherine home with him. I found the story to be rather uninspired.
