Loved this book, but it would definitely be R-rated as a movie for violence and some really intense scenes. It reminded me of some of the really great hostage stories, mixed with that classic Deaver twisting and turning throughout.

Although I love the Lincoln Rhyme series, this is one of Jeffery Deaver's better books. It is suspenseful until the very end. If you enjoy any of Deaver's other books, you will thouroughly enjoy this one. Make sure you have time to read -- once you get past halfway in the book, you will not be able to put it down.

This was an introduction for me to Jeffery Deaver's excellent writing, and it almost scared me to death! He is an intelligent writer with detailed content and leads you through many dark tunnels thinking you see the end when he throws another heart-stopping shock at you.
"A Maiden's Grave" is particularly frightening as it has a busload of hearing impaired students captured by murderous escapees who are negotiating with the FBI. You will read through the night rather than put this book down.

This is simple an outstanding book. it is the best hostage thriller i have ever read, and that i expect i ever will.

Deaver mounts the tension beautifully...every now and then it gets so high that you literally feel it as he lets a little of the tension out...it's a wonderful display of suspense writing.

Deavers characters are vivid, and his characterisation is wonderfully subtle. they are well rounded and very human. Arthur Potter is a compelling hero, and his "invisble" relationship with Melanie is brilliantly done. the way they feel connected to each other during the hostage negotiation even though they have never met is wonderful. I felt very moved.

As well as being a very suspenseful book, this is also an extremely emotional one. there are times when you really feel very sorry for the characters, and an insipid hate for their characters. I felt particularly sorry for poor Donna Hawstrawn. I really wanted this book to keep going, just so that i could see if she would be okay...there are also a couple of moments in the book when you might be moved to tears. there are some devastating events, which really tug at you.

Deavers portrayal of the Deaf is completely unpatronising. He is extremely good at writing about people with what might be termed "handicaps", and in this case i think he was at hsi most sucessful. He wrote about it in such a way that you did feel slight sympathy, but moreover you felt proud of these people. Also, i felt a strange but strong urge to actually really try and get a feel for what it might be like to be Deaf...

This is a brilliant book, with a good twist at the end. good characters, emotional writing, stunning suspense, and an excellent hostage thriller. Deaver is simply the best.

This thriller had its moments, but it started SLOW and then the plot just didn't work for me, I think the author was reaching way too far with all of the adversity, it was too much, a fiction book is just that, but in this one too many liberties were taken.

This gripping novel had me from the beginning. Didn't want to put it down!! A FBI negotiator goes up against a cold blooded killer that doesn't know the meaning of compassion. From a day's long stand-off, and the give and take, you get some insights into the workings of a negotiator and the mind of a crazed killer. Excellent!

A school bus with eight deaf girls and their two female teachers stop along a deserted Kansas road after coming upon a bad car accident, hoping to help the victims. Their terror mounts as they find that after the accident, the victims were killed. Before they realize whats happening, their bus is overtaken by three escaped inmates and they become hostages, forced to drive to an abandoned slaughterhouse along the Arkansas River. What follows is the hostage negotiation between the FBIs Senior Hostage Negotiator, Arthur Potter, and Lou Handy, the cold and ruthless convict leader. Suffice it to say that at times, the negotiations dont go well or as planned.

The reader gets to know Potter and his team, as well as Handy and his fellow inmates. Toss in the excellent descriptions and personalities developed in the deaf girls and their teachers, along with the other various parties involved in such a case (the hostage rescue team, local police, etc.) and youre in for an explosive ride.

Jeffery Deaver and his brilliant twists and turns keep the reader wanting more. A surprising ending doesnt disappoint! I loved this book!

A good suspense/crime novel. Delves into the world of hostage negotiations. Also, all of the female hostages are deaf & you learn some things about the deaf community's culture. The hostage takers are an evil, heartless bunch, especially the ring-leader. But one of the deaf girls is very strong-willed & is giving him a good fight.Good read.
