Laurell K. Hamilton started out about twelve books ago with a great premise. Have a strong female protagonist that lived in alternate reality St. Louis where supernatural creatures were part of society. Her character was a licensed vampire executioner (one of the best I might add), and a necromancer who used her talents to raise zombies for various purposes including clarifying wills, witness testimony and just saying goodbye to loved ones.

The first couple of books in the series focused on Anita Blake. How she handled her job as a re-animator, and how she dealt with reconciling her attraction to the vampire Jean-Claude with the knowledge that someday she might have to kill him or one of his clan. Later books saw her work through her misgivings and agree to a relationshp with him. Then Richard, the king of the werewolves, entered the picture and Anita was attracted to him. It was easier dating a human, even if he did turn furry, than a vampire. Then she saved the wereleopards from an evil overlord and ended up becoming Queen, even though she isn't a were. That added another couple of men into her life.

Then the ardeur struck, and suddenly Anita needs constant sex in order to feed the ardeur. The woman who couldn't bring herself to sleep with one man is now having relations with at least six different men, in various combinations, sometimes all at once.

I was extremely disappointed with this book. I don't have a problem with the soft-core porn, but I would like there to be more plot than sex. This was a short story that was stretched out into a novella, then it had 30 pages of previews for her next book added to make it long enough to publish as a stand alone. There wasn't any real character development, you find out a little about Micah's past and how he became a were. The middle section of the book the two are in bed. Then they go to raise the zombie, and Anita has difficulty with her power, then it ends rather abruptly, without coming to any sort of satisfactory conclusion.

I had low expectations of this book, since I have been consistently disappointed in the last three Anita Blake books. On the up side, Anita actually does some police work and raises a zombie, which hopefully means that LKH is moving back towards that aspect of the series. Also, she adds a bit of history for Micah, my least favorite character in the series, as I've always found him to be a bit cardboard.

On the down side, the background info on Micah is thin, the police case is pretty minimal and the book is actually a short story inflated into a novel sized paperback by the use of wide margins, large font and lots of blank pages. Oh, and a 30 page preview of Danse Macabre. I know it's been promoted as a novella, but charging $7.99 for this is ridiculous, when it could have fit nicely into an anthology. I don't trade books that I anticipate reading again - I'm trading this one.

It was a pretty decent story about a road trip Anita and Micah take to do a job for the FBI. I expected more about the book's namesake, but what can you do?

Be warned, if you are looking for a book of LKH's normal length, this is not it. This is a short story to say the least. It is published in the way of a "teen" book complete with double spacing, large type, and two blank pages between each chapter. I really wish they had just called this what it is and not used the world "novel" to describe it.

Great improvement over the last few books in this series. It's shorter and sticks closer to a plot line. I prefer the books when Anita goes out of town.

I really enjoyed reading this book! I liked the characters' personalities and how they related to each other and the world around them (taking very extraordinary circumstances and events and relating to them in a very everyday manner). I liked the imagination and creativity of the author. And I felt like it had it all - plot (conflict and resolution), romance/sex (but not too much), humor, great characters and a basic readability. I liked it so much I am going back to book 1 in the series and am starting at the beginning.

Not the most substantial story Hamilton has written, but a good book to take on a plane or to the beach. Even after reading it, I still don't feel like Micah is a character that is three dimensional in any way. I just don't care about him one way or the other.

I am on the verge of giving up on Laurell K. Hamilton, despite loving the earlier Anita Blake works. If you've been reading the series, you won't find more than 5-10% new information here. It's a rehash of what went on in the previous novels, a tiny bit of information on Micah's former life and a very weak story in the background. I'm tired of this sub-par work from an author I know can do better. Hamilton is phoning it in.

Laurell Hamilton must have been suffering from writer's burnout when she wrote this one. It's short and doesn't say much about Micah. I learned more about Anita's feelings for Micah and how long and thick his _________ is but not much about his background. Nothing much about his childhood except he has siblings which surprised Anita. Also, it seems that Anita rescued him from a very cruel wereleopard leader who she had to kill. But it's all vague; very little details. So I was somewhat disappointed with this book. After all, Micah is one of Anita's lovers, she has strong love/lust feelings for him and he's able to calm her down. It would have been great to know more about this guy. I just kept wondering what he saw in the hard-bitten, anger filled Anita Blake since apparently he loves her. But then again, he's a wereleopard, probably not the warmest creature around. For once I was glad an Anita Blake book was short.

This is where I lost interest in the series. I loved her earlier books where she spent most of her time fighting vamps, wolves, demons, etc. But this is the last book I attempted to read, didn't even make it through the book. She started getting into more of a romance mode than fighter mode and this is where I put the series to rest.

This is more of a short story, adding to the character development of Micah but having little in the way of plot. Not worth paying full price for, but if you want to know more about Mich (or just want to read some spicy love scenes), worth the 2 or so hours of reading.

A short story of sex and Micah.

That's it. Really. Were you expecting more? There isn't anything more. No, I'm not kidding.

MICAH is a very short novella put into book form to make Ms. Hamilton more money. And no, I'm not kidding about that either.

Thankfully, I like Micah, although I don't think there are too many more descriptions that the author can make up to describe his physical characteristics. He's not that tall, but he's big where it matters, is hotter than hot, and can have sex as often as Anita needs. Which, we all know, is basically any time she's not unconscious.

I'm glad I read it, because it's part of the series. But the only thing I learned that was new is how Micah became a wereleopard and what happened to his family.

That's it. Really. I tried to tell you.

I consider this installation more of a weekender. Not really necessary to the series, but a nice side route for those who want a more in-depth look at Micah. I actually was surprised that the book wasn't more explicit than it was. Since Micah is my least favorite of Anita's men, I found myself enjoying the story, but wishing Nathaniel would show up and protect the threat of Anita becoming too enraptured with Micah.

I was really disappointed with this most recent installment of the Anita Blake series. I understand this book wasn't intended to be a real sequel or the next true novel in the series; but if that is the case I wouldn't have even published it. The entire book can be summed up as follows.

1 Anita fills in for Larry during a crisis.
2 Anita and Micah fly east to raise a zombie for the FBI.
3 Anita manufactures things to stress about regarding her relationship with Micah. These things include, but are not limited to: a nice hotel room, being alone with Micah, neither party asking about the others scars, Micah, Micah, Micah...
4 Micah tells a few little tid bits about his past, and the attack that infected him with lycanthropy.
5 More interactions with Anita and Micah that are too graphic for words. I'm not talking the "Gee I shouldn't be reading this but it's kinda fun..." type of graphic, I'm talking total and complete astonishment, I didn't enjoy it in the least.
6 Lastly, a small fraction of the book is Anita in a cemetery with all kinds of crazy new powers. That is always fun but it was much, much, much, to short.
7 Lastly I have a huge issue with the conclution of the story. I just didn't buy Anita ending up hospitalized after such a minor incident. It just isn't believeable considering everything else she has lived and maintained consciousness through.

Hope this helps you decide if you should purchase this book or wait till the next. If you are anything like I am however, I have read the entire series and I feel like I am past the point of no return. I will no doubt read all LKH's books unless the sex takes up more than 2/3 of the story.

I liked this book! I don't see all the fuss and about people saying it's just all sex and whatnot, because it definitely had less that some previous ones. Less explicit, too. I liked the story, more so than a lot of others that I've read that are this quick to read. It still has the same descriptive nature that I've come to love when reading books by this author.

I do agree with other reviewers that someone was either A) trying to thicken the book by adding blank pages between chapters and using a larger font or B) it was a short story that got out-of-hand.

I don't see it as burn-out, because if it is, then there's lots of other authors out there suffering from the same thing, It may be shorter than what we're used to from Hamilton, but we don't have to worry about buying it new if we can get it with a credit, and the author pockets less of her loyal fans. ;P We're not made of money after all.

It was a good, quick read. Which was exactly what I needed!

Ms. Hamilton's Michah is more of a novelette than a true novel. No plot really. However, she sure knows how to ramp up the tension and write pretty amazing sex scenes. And, she does at last give us a bit more of Micah's back story. If you've read the rest, you'll want to read this one just to stay in the know.

I think that Micah deserves more...maybe another time. All the other men in Anita's life have been developed so much more that Micah has been so far. I hope that his importance in Anita's life is reveiled in more depth at a later date. All things considered it is an awesome series of the type that I don't usually read, but I sure can't wait for each book as they are released. The changes that Anita goes through in her life and the men that support her are why I keep reading.

I enjoyed _Micah_. As others say above, it feels more like her former books, with more plot and relationship. Micah, poor guy, gets shortchanged as Anita is feeling extremely angsty and insecure of late.

This is directly opposite to the other book (_Danse Macabre_) which is HUGE but extremely slight on plot. _Danse Macabre_ is mostly sex. Very little plot or story - actually too much sex and not enough on the relationships. Even considering that it's a Anita Blake book and you EXPECT much torrid sex. :D

So if you thought LKH was changing direction with the novella _Micah_, no, not so much. I happened to read _Micah_ after _Danse Macabre_.

An abridged version of the start [of _Danse Macabre_] are in the paranormal anthology _Bite_. Beware if you think you found a new and different story when you find that book; I assumed it was an Anita Blake short story. The excerpt IS good if you'd like some good bits of Nathaniel and Jason, though.

It's quite entertaining, and I'm in favor of her positive outlook on the "monsters" and the "real" vs. "psychological" monsters. However, I'd classify this as a read and pass it on, not one to add to the collection.

Phone calls at half past dawn are never a good omen for Anita Blake--and this one proves no exception. Larry Kirkland, her Animator's Inc. coworker, has a pregnant wife in early labor and needs Anita to cover for him on an assignment. The deceased is a federal witness who died in FBI protective custody before he could testify; a judge has ruled the witness can be raised as a zombie, and his testimony taken posthumously.

For anyone else, this would be a piece of cake. But Anita is afraid to fly--and the graveyard is in Philadelphia. And then there's the nasty little problem of being apart from her lovers for so long, forcing her to feed her ardeur--the lusthunger that still drives her--with some hapless stranger.

Not the best Laurell K book, but pretty good.

Of the series, this seems to be a "filler" book. It gives more insight on Micah, and Anita spends most of her time with him through the book (makes sense with the title and all...). It's a very quick read and follows along with the story with the normal witty banter as well as the romantic novel theme Hamilton had been moving towards throughout the series.
Also wouldn't be complete without the raising of a corpse, and this time with a judge and lawyers ready to question.

I love Micah! Yes, he is sometimes painted as the pathetic yes man who's only saving grace is his endowment, but I still like him for being man enough to do so unapplogeticly. So I had high hopes pinned on this novella to paint him as the man in Anita's life who is strong enough and secure enough in himself to be who she needs him to be. Also I had hoped that you would get more insight on him why he is Nimir-raj and what it means in depth to be in the nimir-raj/nimir-ra relationship. More about Micah's background, who he is and why. Nope...you got watered down back stories and his "oh so heartbreaking" story about being too well endowed for his girlfriend and she left him for it. Whatever, no man I know would mourn that for long. Most would rent a billboard and proclaim it from the rooftops. So while I still love the character and don't hold it against him that LKH makes him seem weak and the story line weaker, I wish I got more of him in this book and in the books to come.

Laurell K. Hamilton never runs out of steam! More of a novella than a novel, Anita and Micah finally get some 'alone time'. Excellent as always!

I HAVE EVERY BOOK MS. HAMILTON HAS WRITTEN ON THE "ANITA BLAKE VAMPIRE HUNTER SERIES". THIS ONE WAS GOOD, NOT SO MUCH BLOOD AND GORE.ALSO ENOUGH ABOUT EACH PERSON TO TEASE THE MIND. SOME ONE HAD MADE THE COMMENT THAT THIS STORY WAS ABOUT SEX SLAVES. NADA, NOT SO.
ONLY ONE PERSON IS NEEDING SEX AND THAT IS ANITA BLAKE HERSELF, DUE TO THE AUDER. BUT THERE IS EROTICA.

A very short book and not much substance to it either. A disappointment to fans of her longer novels

It is a much smaller book than the others in the series due to only one plotline going on. It was good though. We learn a bit more about Michah, Anita, and their relationship.

This is where the series really started to go downhill for me. There was too much sex and not enough content. *SPOILER ALERT* It seems like Anita has become a sex slave and I couldn't read it anymore I once read that a book with too many sex scenes has nothing left to really captivate the audience anymore. That's how it felt to me.

Hamilton (Incubus Dreams) delivers a highly palatable portion of what makes her series heroine, federal marshal and vampire-hunter Anita Blake, a bestseller: equal portions supernatural crime fightingwith a dollop of old-fashioned male-female melodramaserved up in a world where new were-animals have their own crisis hotline. Filling in for a colleague, Anita travels to Philadelphia to reanimate a deceased federal witness, accompanied by Micah, her wereleopard lover. The jaunt serves as a chance for them to share some rare one-on-one timewithout any of her five other lovers aroundwhich Anita fears is not necessarily a good thing. Even worse, since her magic energy has grown unexpectedly strong, she suspects this won't be your run-of-th e-mill reincarnation. A good entry point for the uninitiated, this offering provides further insight into both characters and their universe.

I want old Anita back. No sex, no 'ardeur'...Just zombies, chickens and blood.
This is not worth what I paid. It should have been added as an extra chapter in one of the smutfests.

I liked this story but it was really short. I wouldn't have wanted miss it but I think Ms. Hamilton could have fleshed this out more.

From back cover:

There are lots of reasons to raise the dead--some private, some public. In this case, the Feds have a witness who died before he could speak on the record. They want him raised so his testimony can be taken. So here I am, on the plane to Philadelphia, flying off to do my job.

But I'm not alone. Micah is with me. Micah, head of the St. Louis wereleopard pard. King to my Queen. The only one of my lovers who can stir my blood with just a glance from his chartreuse cat's eyes. I was happy to have him at my side.

Until he mentioned that this will be our first time alone together. No master vampire. No alpha werewolf. Just me and Micah. And all my fears and doubts...

SEX SEX and MORE SEX. I don't think any of her characters go more than a few pages without getting laid.

This was shorter than previous books, and much less action oriented. Good info on Micah, and reasonable character development.
